Things started out well enough for the Hot Rods. Brett Nommensen’s three-run homer in the top of the fifth gave Bowling Green a 5-1 lead with starter Wilking Rodriguez cruising on the mound.
But Rodriguez got into a bit of trouble in the bottom of the fifth when Henry Rodriguez delivered an RBI single before Andrew Means hit into an RBI groundout to make it 5-3.
Rodriguez gave way to reliever Deivis Mavarez in the bottom of the sixth, which is when things went awry. Mavarez allowed back-to-back singles to start the inning before Shane Carlson hit an RBI sacrifice fly to make it 5-4. Henry Rodriguez then delivered the big blow with a two-RBI double to left, giving Dayton the lead for good at 6-5.
The Dragons added another run in the inning on a Kevin Coddington RBI single to make it 7-5.
Things didn’t get any better in the seventh for Bowling Green. Reliever Kirby Yates allowed RBI singles by Efrain Contreras and Shane Carlson before throwing a wild pitch that allowed Contreras to score and make it a 10-5 game.
Mavarez took the loss. He allowed six runs on six hits over 1 1/3 innings. Wilking Rodriguez got a no-decision after allowing just three runs on eight hits over the first five innings.
