The Western Kentucky University Board of Regents formally approved a contract Thursday for incoming athletic director Ross Bjork, who will be paid a base annual salary of $185,000.

Bjork’s salary, which will be paid with university funds and is higher than that of outgoing AD Wood Selig, was the source of some debate among regents. Selig most recently was paid $175,000, although about $34,000 of that was paid through privately generated funds.

Bjork, who comes to WKU from UCLA, is scheduled to officially begin work Monday. Selig will work with Bjork for about a week before officially leaving WKU on May 5 for Old Dominion University in his hometown of Norfolk, Va., where he will also serve as athletic director.

Bjork’s four-year contract includes an option for a one-year extension to 2015. Bjork could receive bonuses and incentives based on the athletic and academic performance of WKU’s teams. The contract includes a $100,000 buyout.
