- Here is a great example of a hat that has been redone. We took a classic black straw hat and then added red hydrangeas to create a dramatic look.
As April and May approaches, it is our duty as Kentuckians to honor the tradition that makes us famous…HORSERACING! Whether it is Keeneland or Churchill Downs, fashion is as important as picking the winning horse. Forget all of the derogatory stereotypes about Kentucky, not only are we wearing shoes, we’re wearing 6 inch Manolos.
A true fashionista will start planning her outfit months in advance. As soon as the spring couture lines hit the runway in Paris, Southern Belles start looking for that perfect outfit. Start by looking for a statement piece. Whether it’s an over-the-top hat or a form fitting dress, find your inspiration piece and build your outfit around it.
Fun, flirty dresses are always a great option at both venues. Think bold prints and bright colors, you don’t want to fade into the background! Look for that one of a kind dress that leaves a lasting impression. Stay away from your run of the mill stores such as Black House/White Market, JCrew and Ann Taylor unless you want to see 5 others girls wearing the same thing.
Choosing your hat may be the toughest decision you have. There are thousands of great hats available this time of year, ranging from large brimmed to ornate headbands. These can be a little pricey, so if you are planning on making the Derby a yearly event, I recommend purchasing a quality straw hat in either black or tan. Depending on your outfit, you can change the embellishment to make it a stunning piece. June at Hats Galore and More on Broadway has a large selection that can be customized each year.
Whether you are watching the race from Millionaires Row or a friend’s backyard, the first Saturday in May should be spent enjoying all the great things Kentucky has to offer. Thoroughbreds, beautiful women, and bourbon!
