Garden and home event will be held in Glasgow

From gardening and landscape tips to choosing paint colors, an exchange of information will take place Saturday during the Glasgow Home Expo 2010.
“It’s a home and garden show,” said Louise Firkins, sales executive for co-sponsor WLYE 94.1, a Forever Communications station. “It will display a lot of vendors that do a wide variety of services.”
A downscaled version of the Builders Association of South Central Kentucky’s 2010 Home Expo in Bowling Green, the Glasgow event will feature 40 booths, Firkins said. The expo will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday in the National Guard Armory.
The two-day event is free and open to the public. Goody bags will be given to the first 500 people through the door, Firkins said.
Many of the vendors are local, Firkins said. Some of the vendors include Eagle Fabrications, Smith Siding, Affordable Housing and Concrete, Lee Brick and Block, True Home Value and Window City.
Firkins said the event will feature “awesome” door prizes donated by vendors, including a log home package at dealer’s cost, money, several $100 gift certificates, heating and cooling yearly servicing, a bathroom vanity and garden tools.
“This is community minded. It brings the community together,” she said. “This show will have something for everybody – if you want to build a home, someone will be there. If you need an electrician, one or several are going to be there.”
Big Moose’s Bar-B-Q will have food and beverages for sale.
The expo is sponsored by Pools of Leisure, 111 E. Washington St. in Glasgow, with the Glasgow-Barren County Chamber of Commerce and WLYE as co-sponsors.
Ann Stewart, marketing director and tourism director for the chamber, said Glasgow hasn’t had anything like an expo in a long time. The Farm City Expo was successful for a number of years, and the Realtor’s Association sponsored a home and garden show; however, both faded out, she said.
But the interest in this expo has been high, she said.
“Things are looking a bit brighter and people are looking to do things around their homes, and the vendors here will be able to offer a lot of ideas,” Stewart said. “I think it will be a fun event, and it is a good networking event.”
Hoping to draw a large crowd, Stewart said the expo is an opportunity to give something to the community.
“It is a goodwill service,” she said. “People can find out about home repair, home construction, painting.”
Stewart said the goal is to offer the opportunity to discuss services with people who can provide those services in the community.
“This brings in all ages, and it is a good family event,” Firkins said. “This is just a good way to spend the weekend, and it doesn’t cost a thing.”
