Drakes Creek Middle and Bowling Green Junior High Orchestras will be performing “A Night at the Movies” at 6:30 p.m. March 5 at the Bowling Green Junior High Auditorium.
This orchestral group is led by Sarah Berry and Patrick O’Rourke. Berry is a faculty member of Western Kentucky University, where she teaches cello to university and pre-college students, teaches orchestra classes through a partnership with the Warren County School Strings Program, and plays with the Symphony. O’Rourke is the Bowling Green City Schools orchestra teacher.
School orchestra classes began in 2003 when WKU’s Music Department and The Division of Extended Learning and Outreach (DELO) partnered with Warren County Schools to develop the Pre-College Strings Program. The program, which offers high quality instruction in orchestral stringed instruments, was expanded to the city schools the following year. Due to the enormous interest within the city schools, the superintendent felt it necessary to add an orchestra teacher specifically for that school system.
The two programs will once again come together for this exhilarating performance. “The string students have been working hard on some very challenging pieces for this program,” Berry said. “Some of their favorites are Harry Potter and music from Phantom of the Opera.”
Other pieces the students will perform feature music from popular movies such Aladdin, Twilight, Pirates of the Caribbean, Batman and much more.
Admission to the performance is free to the public. Berry invites everyone to attend the performance. “The students are excited to come together in Bowling Green Junior High’s beautiful auditorium for an exciting night of movie music,” Berry said.
