Featured Artist Deborah Davis Mulligan

Mrs. Deborah Mulligan said that pottery is her hobby and her passion. It’s one of the main ways she express herself. She loves the symbols that she embeds in her ceramic bowls, dishes, jars and other pieces.  Deb said, “The symbols are a psychologically deep and universal language. They are ancient; evolve over time and cross cultures. I especially like Celtic symbols. My heritage is Welsh and so I suppose it’s an inherited thing.  An example of the depth of the Celtic history within her works is shown in the Celtic lady vase.  It is 14 inches high, decorated with swirls and motifs that suggest water and the sea.  Her face is also surrounded by the Celtic Triqueta.  The word is Latin for three cornered.  For Christians this symbol stands for the three in one God; Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Deb is a graduate of Bowling Green High School where she said she got her first taste of ceramics with her favorite teacher, Chris Grinstead.  She has a Masters Degree in Counseling Education from Indiana University-South and an associates degree in Visual Arts/Pottery from the Owensboro Community College.  She first used her degrees as a registered nurse and then switched to a professional mental health counselor. But she said when the kids left home and she was faced with the empty nest she found ceramics to be her therapy.   She began selling her works and now shows at four or five craft shows a year.  She now lives in Leitchfield where she works in her private studio   She said she has thought about doing an informal adult clay classes up on the lake in the future.
