Mammoth Cave has been a second home to Ohio native Roger Brucker since boyhood.   He is a founding member of the Cave Research Foundation which has been responsible for many discoveries within the cave system.  His fascination with the cave has also lead to five books, the most recent of which is Grand, Gloomy and Peculiar: Stephen Bishop at Mammoth Cave.

His first novel is based on the true story of slave Stephen Bishop, Mammoth Cave’s famous guide and explorer of the 1840’s and 1850’s whose work paved the way to the cave becoming a National Park.  According to Brucker, “He was the prototype for guiding, educating and entertaining cave visitors. He was the economic engine that put Mammoth Cave on the map of American natural wonders.”
