Russellville Blues Society’s Mary Ann Fisher Concert Series

Published 12:00 am Tuesday, June 9, 2009

The Russellville Blues Society is a non-profit community group that sponsors live blues performances in Russellville. Each summer they hold a series of free concerts in honor of Mary Ann Fisher, who was raised in Russellville and was the first female singer with Ray Charles. The concerts are held at the site of the West Ky African American Heritage Center (6th and Morgan Streets) in a comfortable, backyard setting with local food vendors and artists.

Start the summer with a bang on June 13th with legendary blues guitarist, Larry McCray.  Larry has been a fixture of the Chicago blues scene for two decades, and he is known as one of the greatest blues guitarists of all time including being named Gibson Blues Guitarist of the Year in 2000.   He has released five CDs during his career, and his strong vocals and tight band will make this a memorable night.

Continue the fireworks and fun as we celebrate the true meaning of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness” on July 4th with our second concert featuring the soul tugging sounds of the Michael Gough Group.  Michael is not only a hometown favorite, but he’s one of Kentucky’s most respected blues musicians. An all-star band will back his signature voice and style & you will definitely be entertained and moved by his performance.

The August 7th concert is part of Russellville’s Emancipation Day celebration, and the Walnut Street Blues Band from Louisville will perform.  Featuring the smooth female vocals of Artie Wells, they have performed throughout the state at premier blues festivals. Their classic blues style will be a perfect fit, so don’t miss this one.

The final summer event will be on September 5th and feature the Cincinnati blues band, Cheryl Renee and Them Bones.   Known as the “Goddess of the Blues”, Cheryl Renee and her  band recently represented the Kentuckiana Blues Society at the IBC competition in Memphis. You’ll definitely hear some “blues with an attitude” when they perform.
