BG splits two, caps series at Savannah

The Bowling Green Hot Rods pounded out 15 hits and got a two-run home run from Mike Sheridan in a 9-4 win over the host Savannah Sand Gnats in game two of a seven-inning doubleheader Saturday in Savannah, Ga.

The win gave the Hot Rods (22-20) a split on the afternoon after the Sand Gnats took game one 2-1.

Savannah (23-18) took a 2-0 lead in the first inning of game two, the Hot Rods bats got to work. Jeremy Beckham got things started with a two-RBI single to right – scoring both Sheridan and Isaias Velasquez to tie the game. Robi Estrada then brought Beckham home with a single to give Bowling Green a 3-2 advantage.

The Hot Rods put up another three-spot in the third inning, getting an RBI single from Kyeong Kang and a two-RBI double from Velasquez to make it 6-2.

Savannah responded in the bottom half of the inning, however, getting a two-RBI double from Eric Campbell to make it 6-4.

The Hot Rods put the game out of reach in the fifth, when Sheridan’s homer to right put Bowling Green up 8-4. Kang added an RBI double in the sixth to give the Hot Rods an insurance run.

Chris Andujar (5-2) earned the victory for Bowling Green, allowing four runs – three earned – on six hits over five innings. Reliever Tommy Rafferty tossed two innings of scoreless relief.

In game one, the Sand Gnats recorded only one hit. But that’s all they needed. Campbell hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the first.

The Hot Rods scored a run in the sixth, when Velasquez hit a ground-rule double that scored Jake Jefferies.

Bowling Green starter Frank De Los Santos was the tough luck loser, allowing just two runs on the one hit over six innings of work.

The Hot Rods open a four-game set today at 4:05 p.m. CDT against the Charleston RiverDogs in Charleston, S.C.
