Eateries opening soon in BG

They’re popping up along Campbell Lane and Nashville Road, and they’re going up quickly – the local intersection is becoming a hub for restaurants as several new eateries dot the area.

“Opening soon” signs scatter across the Kroger shopping center area on Campbell Lane. A new Shogun of Japan Steakhouse will open, and a Cheddar’s restaurant is being constructed next door. Behind those establishments, close to Shenanigans Wine and Spirits, sits the building for a new sports bar: Overtime Sports Bar and Grill.

“I’ve had this idea in my head a long time, probably 20 years,” owner Brian Simmons said.

The business, which is set to open June 15, will offer different activities in its 5,200-square-foot building. Workers will set up indoor cornhole boards, pool tables, dart boards, video games, a stage for live music and 34 flat-screen TVs. It will also serve food, including pizza and sandwiches, and offer a full bar.

And it’s a perfect location, manager Paul Parrish said, partly because of the large college student population that lives nearby. Besides, Simmons said, he didn’t want the bar to blend in with the slew of restaurants on Scottsville Road.

“You’re just another establishment on Scottsville Road,” he said. “You’re a dime a dozen, basically.”

The sports bar will hire around 45 people. Managers began taking applications Wednesday and received about 75 by 3 p.m.

“The current job market could be a benefit,” Simmons said. “The application pool might be larger.”

Across the road, Kyoto Gardens, a Japanese restaurant, opened nearly two weeks ago in Buckhead Square. And so far “it’s been great,” owner Nhon Nguyen said. “We’ve been busy every day.”

In 2001, Nguyen helped his brother open Kyoto Diner on Scottsville Road.

“I helped my brother build that restaurant up,” he said. “Then I decided to open one for myself.”

The restaurant, which is mostly family operated, settled into a 2,700-square-foot space in Buckhead Square after a month of renovations. Nguyen picked that location because it draws a lot of traffic, offers good parking and is close to Western Kentucky University.

In fact, he said, in the midst of a recession, “the location, I think, saved it for us.”

A few spaces down from Kyoto Gardens, a family-owned hamburger joint plans to open its doors in Buckhead Square.

Jetter’s Homemade Burgers is based in Franklin, where it has a loyal customer following, general manager Ashly Johnson said.

It’s planned to open this summer – hopefully by mid-June – and will seat about 90 people. (A third location is headed for Glasgow this summer.)

“We had a lot of people who asked for us to come to Bowling Green, and we try to please the guests as much as possible,” she said. “It was a great site. It was affordable and a great location.”

Across the intersection on Nashville Road, close to Big Lots, construction crews are working on a 16,000-square-foot building to house Dunkin’ Donuts, a new Mexican restaurant, a new pharmacy and other businesses. Those shops will open Aug. 1, local Realtor Tom Baker said.

“That is probably the second busiest intersection in Warren County,” he said. “It seems like everything is coming to that side of town … With the congestion on Scottsville Road, it makes sense that some of these other intersections will develop.”
