Old Mulkey Meeting House State Historic Site will host two events in May – the Trail of Caches and the Monroe County Heritage Festival.

The Trail of Caches will be May 1-2 and will feature geocaching adventures around Tompkinsville. The activities will include a free workshop on the basics of the sport of geocaching, prizes for finding the most caches, and the first to find a cache.

Geocaching requires a global positioning satellite (GPS) which can locate a hidden treasure or cache. GPS receivers use satellites to determine your position on the earth, which can be pinpointed within a few feet.

The event begins Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the park shelter with a meet and greet program. There will also be a hot dog dinner offered Friday night for $4 a person. (Pre-registration is required for the dinner.)

The registration fee is $10 the day of the event and $5 if you register by April 27. The park has a limited number of GPS units that can be borrowed for the event.

The second event in May hosted by the park is the Monroe County Heritage Festival May 8-10.

To commemorate the bicentennial of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth, the festival will focus on the Civil War era. Events will include a Blue and Gray Banquet, a viewing of Civil War artifacts, presentations by historians and re-enactors, genealogy information and the Historymobile from the Kentucky Historical Society that provides information about Lincoln’s life. In honor of Mother’s Day, every mother who visits will be eligible for a prize.

This event is co-sponsored by the Monroe County Historical & Genealogical Society, the Monroe County Tourism Commission and the Tompkinsville-Monroe County Chamber of Commerce.

Old Mulkey is the oldest free-standing log church in the Commonwealth. The site is about 25 miles south of the Edmonton Exit on the Cumberland Parkway. Take KY 163 from Edmonton to Tompkinsville. Take the Old Mulkey Road or KY 1446 about two miles past Tompkinsville to the site. From I-65, take the Cumberland Parkway to Glasgow, follow KY 90 from Glasgow, and turn south onto KY 163 to Tompkinsville.
