- Miranda Pederson/Daily NewsFour-year-old Jack Kelley of Bowling Green examines a model train held by his father, Randall Kelley, during last year’s Train Show and Sale at the Old L&N Depot. The event returns Saturday.
It will be a train lover’s dream Saturday at the sHOw Modular Model Railroad Club’s annual Train Show and Sale at the Old L&N Depot.
The show, which is free to the public, will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There will be discounted admission for those who wish to tour the railpark, said Rick Williams, a member of the club that has built the permanent model train layout at the railpark.
The annual show will feature train memorabilia, vendors and, of course, model trains and their accessories.
“We do this a couple times of year,” Williams said.
Williams said in and around Bowling Green, there aren’t a lot of hobby shops that sell train items, and the show and sale allows train enthusiasts to find what they may be looking for from vendors. Vendors carry “a little bit of everything associated with trains,” he said, such as parts and pieces of old toy trains, books, magazines, clothing and crafts.
“So if someone got a model train for Christmas and they want another car on their railroad, they can get that here if they want,” Williams said.
The show, Williams said, also allows others who like the hobby to come in and ask questions of the experts.
“It’s more than playing with toy trains,” he said. “It’s an educational hobby.”
Putting together model trains and layouts takes a knowledge of mathematics, history and art, Williams said. But if playing with trains is what got people into the hobby, then “ that’s fine with us,” he said.
He said the train shows let people relive memories associated with railroads, either taking trips on them or working on them, he said.
“(The show) means a lot to us,” Williams said. “We like to hear the stories of others who might have experience with trains and railroading. The smiles and wide eyes of the kids … it’s just special.”
