Little Caesars latest in BG’s pizza offerings

It’s bound to happen between now and Christmas. You’ll buy a gift card? It will snow? Someone will bring you a fruitcake? Well, maybe. But my thinking is, you’ll need a pizza. Fortunately, Bowling Green has lots of choices that now include one more. Little Caesars pizza has come to town with some unique and inviting twists.

To begin with, it has a drive-thru window. I walked in to order my pizzas when I noticed the window. My initial thought was, good idea, but surely you must order ahead for that! Here’s the first twist – Little Caesars has large cheese, sausage or pepperoni hand-tossed pizzas “hot and ready” anytime, day or night, if you want to drive through and buy one.

During this holiday season I thought this might come in handy if you’ve had enough ham, turkey or prime rib, or enough fine dining until the new year. Or perhaps you’re in the mood for fine dining and the kids are not.

As I sat waiting for my special order pizzas, more than a dozen cars drove through, and it was evident the Little Caesars staff took the commitment to having the pizza ready very seriously. It was like the soup kitchen on Seinfeld with consistent verbal “yell outs” to make sure there were always just enough pizzas to accommodate customers, but also few enough to keep them fresh. It was impressive.

Here’s another enjoyable twist Caesar himself could have used – each of those large pizzas are priced at $5.99 and Little Caesars also has a variety of combos with your choice of one of those pizzas, Little Caesars Crazy Bread, Caesar wings and soft drinks for even better deals. That would have kept his council and constituents happy enough to have kept him in office.

Little Caesars does not deliver, so I stopped in. I meandered through the menu with a helpful, mostly knowledgeable staff, and realized that if I wanted anything other than the three pizzas I mentioned, they would have to be special ordered and were not part of any combo. I ordered a large (the only size Little Caesars has) hand-tossed supreme pizza, a deep-dish sausage pizza (for a 5-year-old who loves sausage), an order of Crazy Bread and an order of Caesar Wings.

The wait was just upward of 15 minutes, which wasn’t bad, but I would suggest ordering ahead if you want something special. A couple came in who had ordered ahead, but the order had been lost, so the owner gave them their pizzas at a reduced rate. The mark of a good leader.

Finally, the time came to taste the pizza and I had high hopes for something new, different and delicious – and I was not betrayed! Little Caesars may not have the best presentation, or even the most generous of toppings, but the flavors of cheese, just the right amount of sauce and the crusts made for a “real” pizza that I could sink my teeth into, and my dining companions agreed.

Each of us also enjoyed the bread and wings. I thought the bread might just taste like the edge of the crust, but it had its own tangy dough flavor dusted with garlic, oil and parmesan and came with a little dish of marinara dipping sauce. The wings, too, were a generous portion of chicken with a unique, mild sauce. You can also get barbecue or hot wings.

As I sat waiting for my pizzas, I had an idea that you could order Caesars cheese pizza, with its unique flavor, as a foundation, then go home and add anything you like. If it were me it would be feta cheese, kalamata olives, basil and sun-dried tomatoes. But that’s just me!

So if someone shows up at your house with a fruitcake, you can say: “Brutus, et tu?” (oh, you knew it was coming sometime) and tell them you’d rather have a Little Caesars pizza instead.
