According to Nia Eagles basketball coach Vincent Robinson, there’s nothing David Laury can’t do.

Western Kentucky apparently will find out in the upcoming years if that’s true.

According to Robinson, Laury – a 6-foot-8, 225-pound product – has verbally committed to WKU for the 2009-10 season. Laury played high school basketball last year in East Orange, N.J., before joining the Nia Eagles, a prep school team based out of the Alif Muhammad Nia School in Newark, N.J.

“He can play inside, he can play outside, he brings the ball up for us sometimes,” Robinson said. “He’s a very, very good 3-point shooter. He can drive to the basket. He makes everyone around him better.”

Laury – the 143rd-ranked power forward prospect by ESPN.com – would become the fourth Hilltopper recruit for the 2009-10 season. Forwards William Green and Jordan Swing, both 6-6, plus point guard Caden Dickerson, all signed with the Hilltoppers during the early signing period in November.

Laury can sign with the Hilltoppers in April. WKU coach Ken McDonald cannot comment on recruits until they have signed with the school.

Laury couldn’t be reached for comment.

According to Robinson, Laury probably would play at the small forward position at WKU, but Laury also is versatile enough to play at off guard or power forward.

On the Nia Eagles’ Web site at niaprepeagles.com, Laury is listed as a guard … and forward … and center.

“He does everything but sell popcorn at the game,” Robinson joked.

Against Apex Academy last week, Robinson said Laury finished with 36 points, 19 rebounds and five assists. A day later he followed it up with 30 points, 14 rebounds and nine assists.

While at East Orange last year, Robinson said Laury averaged 22 points and 12 rebounds.

“Dave is the walking mismatch for us,” Robinson said. “There’s not too many people at 6-8 who are going to defend him on the wing.”

Robinson also said Laury made up his mind after visiting E.A. Diddle Arena for the Hilltoppers’ 67-63 win over Georgia last week.

More than 7,000 fans were in attendance, two days after WKU beat then-No. 3 Louisville.

Robinson said Laury chose WKU over Oklahoma State, Iona, New Mexico State, Central Florida, Providence and St. John’s.

“Bottom line, he loved the atmosphere at the Georgia game,” Robinson said. “At the airport on the way back home, he called me and said, ‘It’s not going to get any better than this.’ He said, ‘This is perfect.’ ”
