Hello 2008 Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp Registrants (campers) and potential attendees!
OK, so the museum just completed ROMP 2008 and the historic Pioneers of Bluegrass Gathering and now it’s on to our next signature event which takes place September 12-14th:
Monroe-Style Mandolin Camp!
The ultimate way to celebrate Bill Monroe’s birthday, which is September 13th is to come to Western Kentucky and honor the Father of Bluegrass by learning his creation in the place where it was first concieved! Thank you to all who have taken advantage of the early registration! 32 mandolinists have signed up so far. We have 9 campers returning for their 3rd year, 3 coming for seconds and 20 new campers!
Only 18 spots left!
Some of you are and some of you aren’t aware of new developments so here’s an overview/update:
The Field Trip on 9/12 will take us to Rosine, KY in Ohio County (birthplace of Bill) for a fish-fry and your 2008 group picture in the Rosine Barn which is on the National Register of Historic Places. Campers are then encouraged to walk up to the Rosine Cemetery to visit the Bill Monroe & “Uncle Pen” gravesites.
Due to an unforeseen schedule conflict beyond our control;
On the afternoon of Saturday the 13th,
Roland White and Mike Compton will be switching places. Roland will be coming in to:
1.) teach Playing Waltzes Bluegrass
Style (with Bobby Osborne),
2.) perform in the Faculty Concert
on Saturday Night
3.) teach Alternate Tunings on
Sunday
4.) and (both on Sunday), teach
Monroe in the Later Years as
well as participate in the Q & A
session that includes Brown,
Osborne, Wakefield and
Waller.
Will Kimble of Kimble Mandolins is going to be the Camp Luthier and will be doing small but expert jobs on your instruments (fret dressing, set-up, bridge cutting, etc.) during camp as well as conducting a class on Sunday called
Mandolin Set-Up and Maintenance.
Now, here is how the set-up part will work: Email Mike Lawing at mike@bluegrassmuseum.org and put
WORK ORDER in the subject column.
In the body of the message put:
1.) Your Name
2.) Make, model and year of
mandolin to be worked on
3.) Work requested
Obviously, Mr. Kimble is only one person and will have limited resources (being away from his shop) so Mike will schedule his jobs on a “First-Come-First Served” basis with input from him as to the length of time required for each job. Then Mike will make a schedule of appointments and send you each of your appointment day/time along with an ESTIMATE of the cost.
As you have all had your instruments worked on before we hope you will understand that an ESTIMATE is the best we can do until Mr. Kimble has a look at your individual instrument.
Mr. Kimble will be charging a nominal fee for each job + materials and donating the proceeds to Butch Baldessari at the
Band Together for Butch Fund. If you don’t need work done and still want to send a card or donation you may do so at:
Butch Baldassari

2008’s camp is shaping up to be awesome and all of us at the museum are extremely excited about it!
Those of you who have not signed up yet are encouraged to get registered before it sells out! We will only sell 18 more spots before we call it full so CLICK HERE to download the PDF and fax it in ASAP!
