Law enforcement in Logan County located and destroyed a large methamphetamine laboratory Wednesday afternoon.
Agents from the South Central Kentucky Drug Task Force executed a search warrant at 290 Gasper River Road off Ky. 73 at 1 p.m., according to a task force report.
The agents backed out of the facility after discovering a meth laboratory with 16 cylinders containing suspected anhydrous ammonia, according to the report. Some of the cylinders were about 5 feet tall and contained several gallons of the gas.
Agents and emergency personnel put themselves in danger every time they have to clean up a meth laboratory, said Jerry Smith, director of the task force. In this case, there were chemical dangers, but also the risk of electrocution and explosion.
“This was one of the most dangerous labs I have been to in a long time,” he said.
A meth house will resemble a landfill due to the levels of debris and garbage, Smith said.
“A meth user doesn’t care about anything other than their next fix,” he said.
The Auburn Rural Fire Department and The Medical Center Ambulance Service was called in to help. The cylinders were tested to determine their contents, according to the report, and several did hold a large amount of anhydrous ammonia.
“The tanks were destroyed on site because of the danger or transporting them,” according to the report.
The U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called to assist because weapons were found and because of the large amount of anhydrous ammonia, according to the report.
The agents also found that electricity was being stolen for the house using an altered meter with the main cables exposed, according to the report.
No one was taken into custody at the home, but police said the case will be presented for an indictment to a grand jury in either Logan County or U.S. District Court.
