It’s been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The photographer however can hold the beauty and share it with all. This is the case with Brent Whitlow. “It just started as a hobby, I don’t consider myself a professional, I just like to take pictures.” Born and raised in Bowling Green, and a graduate of Bowling Green High School, Brent decided to do something different a couple of years ago so he went out and bought a Canon ESO Rebel 2000 camera. “It’s just a run of the mill camera that anyone can use,” stated Brent. He took a four-week class at Shutterbug and wants to thank them, especially Faye for their patience with him.
“I didn’t expect to get this far. I just want to get better at it.” He stated that he isn’t planning to quit his regular job of eleven years at Nasco, but with a smile stated, “but if that is where I am led it would be wonderful.” With realistic short term plans such as buying more lenses and equipment to help with the portraiture work, he hopes to have a studio in the future.
Brent Whitlow has shown his pictures at the Public Theater of Kentucky, the Duncan Hines Festival, the Seventh Street Baptist Church Winter Wonderland, the Girl Scouts of Kentuckiana Cookie Kick-Off, the TrailBlazers Award Program, Girls Inc. Annual Dinner, The New Era Planning Association Heritage Festival, The Downtown Redevelopment Association Patrotic Celebration, the Seventh Street Baptist Church Ordination Services and is currently showing at the Boomerang. He sold works at both shows and has many in the homes of private collectors.
I asked Mr. Whitlow about that special gift that artists with a camera have of seeing that special shot and catching it. Brent modestly said, “Some scenes are just handed to me.” Sounds like work and dedication to me as Brent keeps his camera with him constantly, waiting for “the Shot,” This paid off as in the picture shown here of the College Street walk bridge. “I just knew the picture would be there someday,” stated Brent. And one evening around midnight with the fog rolling in, as he was crossing over it, there it was, and what a shot! Another, in the alley off the square, he found himself in the snow and cold, catching another magnificent view, or the downtown building where the Brewing Company is housed. We have all seen it, but looking at it from this photographers lens, it looks so grand.
Brent Whitlow has done work for the Annie Link Aids Foundation event, the Shake Rag Community Event, the Nasco annual appreciation dinner party, some touring shots there, some senior pictures for Bowling Green H.S. and is proud to be the official photographer of the Oakland Mt. Zion Baptist Church. “I am glad that my church family thought enough of me to let me do this,” stated Brent.
You can catch Brent Whitlow’s next show at the Public Theater of Kentucky on Chestnut Street this coming April or at the Chamber of Commerce in May. You can contact Mr. Whitlow at 202-3150 for commission work. He leaves us with this thought, “Just try something different.”
