POLICE NEWS : 13 mailboxes damaged by baseball bat

Thirteen mailboxes apparently were hit this weekend with a baseball bat from a moving vehicle, according to a Bowling Green Police Department report.

The damage occurred between 11 p.m. Friday and 6 p.m. Saturday between the 500 and 800 block of Nutwood Street, according to the report.

The damaged mailboxes will need to be replaced.

Damage was estimated to be $1,300, according to the report.

Activity report — City police had fewer calls for service in January compared to the previous year going from 3,478 to 3,363.

For the month, there were 48 arrests for driving under the influence and 110 drug-related arrests. Officers issued 845 traffic citations and made 598 criminal charges. In January 2007, there were 62 DUI arrests and 83 people charged with drug-related charges. There were also 1,008 traffic citations issued and 719 criminal charges.

Juvenile charges included 11 thefts, a kidnapping, two assaults, two criminal mischief incidents and a robbery.

Arrest — Rodney D. Downs, 18, of Bardstown was charged with trafficking in marijuana less than eight ounces, possession of drug paraphernalia, alcohol intoxication and possession of alcohol by a minor at 12:22 a.m. Sunday at the Hilltop parking lot, according to a Western Kentucky Police Department report.

Burglary — A TV, a DVD/VCR combination, a DVD player, a PlayStation 2 with a game, DVDs, a poker set, four cartons of cigarettes, a PSP and four PSP games were stolen between 2:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. Monday from a residence in the 1200 block of Loop Street, according to a city police report. The items were valued at $2,247.

Burglary — An Xbox, a Nintendo Wii, games and five controllers valued at $1,663 were stolen between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. Monday in the 500 block of Lost Circle, according to a city police report. A door was also kicked in at the residence causing $300 in damage.

Criminal mischief — Someone attempted to break into two automated teller machines at about 3:30 a.m. Monday at National City Bank at 1054 Fairview Ave., according to a city police report. The suspect was not able to gain access to either machine but caused $27,000 in damage.
