Rough River’s Annual Dulcibrrr Event Set For Feb. 1-3

Published 12:00 am Monday, January 28, 2008

Rough River State Resort Park will hold its annual “Dulcibrrr” event n also known as the Dulcimer Music Festival n on the weekend of Feb. 1-3.

Ann MacFie and Dick “Richard” Albin started the Dulcibrrr over 20 years ago as an off season event for Rough River State Resort Park. The “brrr” in Dulcibrrr denotes the cold weather expected in February. However, the first Dulcibrrr was greeted with a short sleeve winter. Then, as now, the Dulcibrrr is designed as a break from cabin fever whether it is cold or warm.

The Mountain or lap dulcimer is Kentucky’s official music instrument. People outside of Kentucky were first introduced to the dulcimer, which developed in the Appalachian Mountains from European folk instruments, when Perry County native Jean Ritchie took one with her to New York in 1947. The internationally known folk singer’s use of the dulcimer spread its popularity around the country and world. Originally associated with old ballads and front porch musicales, the dulcimer is now used to play everything from folk music to classical music and rock and roll.

Join Rough River for a celebration of this great American dulcimer music. Dulcimer music, workshops, and jam sessions orchestrate this weekend. Performers include Molly McCormack, Anne MacFie, Jon Morgan, Lorinda Jones and Richard Albin.
