Redshirt freshman Nikki Workman booted the first goal of her career to help the Western Kentucky Lady Toppers secure a 1-1, tie against Wofford on Friday at the WKU Soccer Complex.
Workman’s goal came in the 48th minute off an assist from sophomore Megan Meinke, eliminating the 1-0 advantage Wofford held since the game’s opening minutes.
Still, Western (2-1-1) missed several opportunities to pull ahead, outshooting the Terriers 29-6 for the game – including a ball that hit the crossbar and two that hit the goal posts.
“It was a frustrating game for us,” said WKU coach Jason Neidell. “We certainly created enough opportunites to win by three or four goals today.”
Bowling Green High School product Whitney Steelman’s goal put Wofford (3-1-1) on top in the seventh minute, thanks to a pass from fellow senior Kara Bennewitz.
Western freshman Mallory Outerbridge paced the Lady Toppers with seven shots, five on goal. Junior Kristin Cocchiarella attempted six shots.
Goalkeeper Meredith Goodson stopped one shot for Western, while Wofford goalie Katie McChesney stopped 11.
The Lady Toppers face Eastern Illinois in Charleston, Ill. at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
