Jesse Stuart, the popular Kentucky writer and poet, will be honored during the weekend of Sept. 21-22 at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park.

The annual Jesse Stuart Weekend will feature field trips, speakers, music, films and theater based on Stuart’s life and work. Stuart, who was the poet laureate of Kentucky, often wrote about education and life in rural northeastern Kentucky where he was born and lived. The lodge at the state park is named after him.

This is the 25th year for the Jesse Stuart Weekend, sponsored by the park and the Jesse Stuart Foundation.

The event will start Friday with a trip to the Jesse Stuart Nature Preserve, which was originally part of the writer’s farm, followed by a 7:30 p.m. program on Stuart. A reception will be at 8:30 p.m.

On Saturday, guests can visit W-Hollow at 9 a.m. to see the land that inspired Stuart’s literary work and then head to Ashland to visit the Jesse Stuart Foundation. At 7 p.m., the drama “The Thread That Runs So True,” based on Stuart’s book, will be performed by students from Greenup County High School at the Greenbo Lake amphitheater.

Throughout the weekend, David Palmore will conduct evaluations of Stuart’s books and music will be provided by Carl and Buzzy Leming. Films on Stuart’s works, such as “Split Cherry Tree,” “Heart of a Town,” and “This Is Your Life” will be shown at the Jesse Stuart Library in the lodge during the weekend.

The event is free and open to the public.
