Fair hosts smashing events

- Miranda Pederson/Daily NewsAdam Madison of Smiths Grove turns as he slams into another driver during Friday night’s demolition derby at the Southern Kentucky Fair.
Eric Harwood hoped the rain would hold off long enough for a few good crunches at the demolition derby, scheduled for Friday night at the Southern Kentucky Fair. He clutched three patty melts in one hand as he made his way back through the crowd to his friends Shaun and Tiffany Newcomb, who sat with their infant daughter, Tiffany, in the packed bleachers, waiting for the engines to start.
They did have a wait; a bulldozer scraped mud on the track long after the derby’s appointed 7 p.m. starting time, as country bands also scheduled for 7 p.m. were just beginning to set up nearby.

Still, the fair was worth a little waiting to Harwood, a Bowling Green resident who said he’d never been to the SOKY Fair before this year.
“We’ve been here just about every night, just riding the rides and watching the races,” he said.
They’d enjoyed almost everything they’d done, Shaun Newcomb said.
“Except for one ride. I didn’t like it,” he said. “I was a little scared.”
Neither man recalled which one that was, other than to say it went up high and spun – a description that fit several attractions on the midway.
Afternoon rains faded into a breezy, overcast evening with an occasional ominous sprinkle, leading fair treasurer Tara Griffith to hope for a record crowd Friday night, drawn by the derby and promise of country music.

As of Thursday night, 10,016 people had come through the fair’s gates, she said.
“It’s gradually increased every night,” Griffith said.
The fair closes out its weeklong run Saturday, with gates opening at 5 p.m. Featured attractions Saturday are the Mud Run, motorcycle show and musical acts, all scheduled to start at 7 p.m. Admission is $10.
Angela Crump of Alvaton spent her Friday taking her daughter Katie, 3, and son Caleb, 1, on the few rides for small children and making the rounds of midway games.
“I like it. They like it,” she said.
After trying their luck at seven or eight games in 2 1/2 hours, Crump carried an inflatable baseball bat, sparkling baton, small stuffed penguin and stuffed snake. Her most recent acquisition was a “Dora the Explorer” picture Katie won at the dart toss, she said.
Crump said she might give her children another round on the rides, but first headed back to the game booths – angling for another prize for Caleb.
