Friends of L&N Depot seeking volunteers
Published 12:00 am Friday, July 27, 2007
The non-profit organization, Friends of the L&N Depot, Bowling Green, KY, is developing a Historic Railpark Train Museum of a caliber equivalent to the Smithsonian. The Museum is interactive with educational and historical exhibits and galleries highlighting the socio-economic and cultural importance of the railroad to this region. The self-guided museum is slated to open Labor Day weekend.
In the past, the Historic Railpark has offered railcar tours by reservation only. As of August 1, 2007, the Railcars will be open for tours on a regular basis. The current consist of cars includes the 1953 Pullman Sleeper (Towering Pine), the 1949 Pullman Diner (Duncan Hines), the 1911 L&N Presidential Car, and 1978 CSX Caboose. Soon to be added is the Railroad Postal Car, and an E8 Engine. There are few Postal Cars in existence, and we have the distinction, and rarity, of having 2 Pullman Cars in our possession. This collection of cars is quite spectacular.
We are in need of volunteers who would be willing to train as docents for tours that will be given hourly, on the half-hour, between 10:30-4:30, Tuesday through Saturday, and 1:30 – 3:30 on Sunday. Each docent would work a 3 hour shift, with the exception being Sunday, which would be a 4 hour shift. We would prefer docents to commit to a consistent weekly, or at minimum bi-weekly, basis. Docents can volunteer for more than one shift if they so desire. Training sessions will be provided July 24, 2007 at 9:00 and 3:00 at the L&N Depot, 401 Kentucky St. We ask that potential volunteers choose one of the 2 hour sessions to attend
We are also in need of volunteers who would be willing to work in the Gift Shop the same hours and days as the docents. The Gift Shop volunteer would be responsible for stocking and pricing merchandise, running the cash register, providing Museum and Railpark information to interested patrons, and light office work (i.e. cataloging archival donations, correspondence, etc.). Training sessions will be provided July 24, 2007 at 9:00 and 3:00 at the L&N Depot, 401 Kentucky St. We ask that potential volunteers choose one of the 2 hour sessions to attend
