It wasn’t bad at all for a first try.

The Bowling Green Disc Golf Club held the first of its monthly summer tournaments Sunday at Preston Miller Park with better-than-expected participation.

&#8220The attendance was good for our first try,” tournament director Ernie Small said. &#8220I was thinking something in the 20s would be great, but the 32 that we had was fantastic.”

The only negative to take from the first tournament was the thunderstorms that caused a pair of short weather delays.

Despite interrupting play twice, nearly the entire field completed the two-round casual play tournament.

&#8220The weather was tough – that was a factor,” Small said. &#8220Most everybody hung in there, though.”

The field was broken into four flights based on first-round scores, with the top three finishers in each flight receiving prizes.

Larry Bledsoe was the tournament’s overall winner, shooting a 16-under 92 – including a tournament low round of 44 in the second round.

Howie Baird was second and Justin Moore finished third.

Other flight winners included Chuck Ridgeway (105), Brent Dene (117) and Jason Clark (125).

&#8220Being flighted, everybody really had some chances to compete for some prizes,” Small said. &#8220I think it’ll grow from word of mouth and when people realize that they can be competitive. They’re competing against people on their own level and that’s encouraging.”

Proceeds from the tournament will go toward putting in a new course at Phil Moore Park on Scottsville Road.

&#8220We’ll be able to put some money into the Phil Moore Park fund and hopefully that will get going soon,” Small said.

The next monthly tournament will likely be July 29 at Hobson Grove Park.
