GLASGOW – Two men are dead and a police officer wounded after a exchange of gunfire Wednesday in Glasgow.

The Glasgow Police Department responded at 11:53 a.m. to 426 McKenna St. after shots were fired, said Lt. Maxie Murray, spokesman for the department.

&#8220When an officer arrived, he found a fatally wounded victim in the front yard,” Murray said.

While Glasgow Officer J.D. Walden was checking on the victim – Nathan D. Bybee, 47, of Glasgow – police said Brandon S. Ryan, 31, of Glasgow shot at the officer and Walden returned fire, Murray said.

Walden was struck in the exchange and was quickly taken to T.J. Samson Community Hospital in Glasgow, Murray said. The officer, who has been with the police department since July 3, was released from the hospital within a few hours.

As Walden and Ryan shot at each other, Ryan went into the McKenna Street residence and barricaded himself inside, Murray said.

The police department, Kentucky State Police and Barren County Sheriff’s Department then surrounded the residence, he said.

&#8220Nearby residents were evacuated for their safety,” Murray said.

The department’s emergency response team set up outside the home, while Bybee’s body was removed from the scene at about 2 p.m. by Barren County Coroner Mike Swift. The only movement that could be seen from outside was a television in a front room.

The department waited for video-equipped robots from state police to arrive; just over six hours later, after sending in two robots and determining the first floor was clear, police entered the house and found Ryan in an upstairs room, dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, Murray said.

Lenny Shoopman of Glasgow, who lives near the home, said he heard 10 to 12 shots at about noon.

&#8220They were loud,” he said, even from his house about three blocks away. &#8220I’m ready to move out of this neighborhood.”

Shoopman was around a crowd of neighbors who were standing along the street, trying to find out what had happened.

State police are investigating the shots fired at the officer, said Trooper Todd Holder, spokesman for state police in Bowling Green, while Glasgow Police will investigate the rest of the incident.

No motive for the shooting has been released at this time, Murray said, and neither Ryan or Bybee had a felony criminal record.
