John Pipes Gaines

John Pipes Gaines has been a part of the Daily News since 1966 in a full-time capacity. He is publisher of the newspaper. He is a member of the board of News Publishing LLC, corporate publisher of the Daily News, as well as vice president and secretary of the corporation and a board member and secretary of Daily News Broadcasting Co. Mr. Gaines is the fourth generation of his family to be active in the operation of the Daily News.

The Bowling Green native graduated from Bowling Green High School in 1960 and received his journalism degree from the University of Kentucky in 1964. He is a member of Sigma Chi social fraternity.

Gaines spent two years’ active duty in Korea and stateside assignments in the U.S. Army Signal Corps. He attained the rank of first lieutenant.

He is a member of Christ Episcopal Church, for which he is a former member of vestry and a committee member of two capital fund-raising campaigns. He is a former member of the boards of Junior Achievement and United Way, for which he chaired one of the group’s allocation committees. He is also a former Jaycee. Pipes belongs to the Noon Rotary Club, the Kentucky Historical Society and the Society of Professional Journalists.

He is an avid outdoorsman and a sponsor in the National Wild Turkey Federation and Quail Unlimited. He is a Kentucky Colonel and was appointed as member of the Newsprint Recycling Task Force.
