Super Saturdays beginning this week

The Center for Gifted Studies’ Winter Super Saturdays program begins Saturday at Western Kentucky University.

Designed to provide opportunities for students to broaden their interests, 35 classes emphasize a hands-on, minds-on approach to learning. Classes include &#8220Kitchen Table Science,” &#8220Game Creators: Dark Basic Programming,” &#8220Rocket Science,” &#8220Junior Crime Fighters,” &#8220Advanced Dragonology” and &#8220Mysteries in American History.”

Classes are available for first- to seventh-graders and are from 12:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Feb. 3, 10, 17 and 24.

Financial aid is available.

WEHS receives grant for agriculture lab

The Warren East High School Agriculture Department has received a $725 grant from the Kentucky Department of Agriculture.

The money will be used to establish an outdoor learning laboratory with 30 to 40 varieties of daylilies.

The area will enhance student learning in plant science and floriculture and can provide future opportunities for students to hybridize new varieties.

Dean’s list released for Bellarmine

Bellarmine University in Louisville released its dean’s list for students with a 3.5 grade-point-average or better on a 4.0 scale.

Warren Countians included: Junior nursing major Tara Anne Daniel, a graduate of Bowling Green High School; nursing senior Kathryn Ryan Davis, also BGHS grad; freshman Rachel G. Keyser, a Greenwood graduate and math major; and junior Mary Beth Craig, a biology major and Warren East grad.

Whitney earns spot on Moberly dean’s list

Brock Whitney was named to the Dean’s List at Moberly College in Moberly, Mo., for the 2006 fall semester.

Whitney is the son of Bobby and Tracy Whitney of Bowling Green.

BGJHS and BGHS cheerleaders net win

The Bowling Green Junior High Cheerleaders took first place in the Large Middle School Division the fourth annual Blue and Gold Classic at Warren East High School on Jan. 13.

The Bowling Green High Cheerleaders took first place in the Varsity Co-Ed Division in the same competition.

Several local students make all-district band

The following students auditioned and were selected to the Middle School All-District Band: Laneisha Jackson, Joseph Case, Victor Bassey, Kimmie Loiacono, Elizabeth Reed, Travis Strickler, Katie Cohron, Sam Alexander, Megan Taing and Diane Lee, all of Bowling Green Junior High School.

Warren Co. students win awards at Capitol

Students from middle schools and high schools in the Warren County school district earned six Gold Awards, 17 Silver Awards and numerous honorable mention awards in the Scholastic Arts competition held at the Capitol Arts Center.

All award-winning pieces are displayed at the Capitol Arts Center.

Warren County’s Gold Award winners, who will advance to national competition, are Shino Sleeper of Greenwood High School in sculpture, Kit Cheng of Greenwood in drawing, Katie Bautista of Henry F. Moss Middle School in mixed media, Jose Rodriquez of Moss in both mixed media and drawing, and Kayla Bealmear of Moss in mixed media.

Silver Award winners from Warren County are Andrea Clark of Greenwood in drawing, Mindey Knight of Greenwood in painting, Heather Pillow of Greenwood in painting, Abby Cundiff of Greenwood in mixed media, Paige Bennett of Greenwood in photography, Allyn Goatley of Moss in drawing, Ashton Phelps of Moss in drawing, Trevor Piper of Moss in drawing, Caitlan Eades of Moss in mixed media, Nathan McCrary of Moss in drawing, Crystal Roberts of Moss in mixed media, Kaylee Staude of Moss in mixed media, Edith Guzman of Moss in drawing, Steven Sparkman of Moss in drawing, Mica Baker of Warren Central High School for two digital imagery entries, and Jesse Hazel of Warren Central in painting.

Greenwood students earning honorable mention awards are Julie Hansbrough, Missy Pitcock, Laura Pate, Sleeper, Clark, London Wood, Josh Willoughby, Knight, Pillow, Lea Phelps, and Samantha Mangold.

Moss students earning honorable mention are Aldin Mujanovic, Kristen Lewis, Aaron Henderson, Jessica Price, Phelps, Danishia Colomb, Allison Clark, Joanna Flores, Colton Whitman, Amanda Ledbetter, Dado Alic, Jayme Powell, Briana Phillips, Melinda McGaw, Kayla Curtis, Jocelin Ortega, and Sparkman.

Ashley on dean’s list at Hazard tech school

Daniel R. Ashley of Bowling Green was named to the dean’s list for part-time students at Hazard Community and Technical College for fall 2006.

The part-time students dean’s list is for part-time students who earn at least a cumulative 3.5 grade point average, complete at least 15 HCTC semester credits of course work numbered 100 or above, and who complete 3 to 11 HCTC semester credits for the academic term.

16 schools participate in Buckets of Hope

Buckets of Hope – an annual Family Enrichment Center fundraiser – is going on in the Bowling Green City and Warren County schools through Feb. 9.

By tossing loose change into the buckets provided by Porter Paint, you can help the Family Enrichment Center empower families and prevent child abuse in the Barren River Region.

Participating schools include: Bowling Green Junior High, Bowling Green High, Briarwood, Dishman McGinnis, Greenwood High, Holy Trinity, Lost River, McNeill, North Warren, Oakland, Potter Gray, Richardsville, Rich Pond, T.C. Cherry, Warren Central’s Jr. ROTC, and Warren East High School.

The top fundraising classroom and/or club in each school will be awarded a meal and free Frosty from Wendy’s.

School coordinators will be awarded prizes, including Parent Teacher Store gift certificates.

Two local students on Transy’s dean’s list

Transylvania University senior Patrick Coleman and junior Katie Ouellette were named to the Dean’s List for the 2006 fall term.

Coleman, an accounting major, is the son of Penny Travelsted of Bowling Green.

Ouellette, a mathematics and physics double major, is the daughter of Edward Ouellette of Lexington and Lisa Graven of Bowling Green.

Transylvania, founded in 1780, is the nation’s 16th-oldest institution of higher learning and consistently ranked in national publications as one of the top liberal arts colleges in the country.

Junior high students win at Gov.’s Cup

Bowling Green Junior High placed first at the Governor’s Cup district competition at Edmonson County on Saturday.

Team awards include: First place Future Problem Solving, Second Place Quick Recall, Team Sportsmanship Award.

Individual awards went to: Written Assessment Math: first place, Josh Song, second place, Bernardo Saravia, fourth place Megan Taing;

English Composition: first, Michelle Korte, second, Madison Heckman

Written Assessment Science: first, Dillon Draper, second, Matt Miller

Written Assessment Social Studies: first, Austin Lyons, second, Isabella Emmanuele

Written Assessment Arts and Humanities: fifth, Kelly Johnson.

Drakes Creek wins district competition

Warren County’s Drakes Creek Middle School won five of the six individual events and the Quick Recall team event to capture the District 19 Governor’s Cup academic competition held Jan. 27.

Drakes Creek amassed 59 points to only 26 for runner-up Russellville Middle School.

Leading the victorious Drakes Creek team was Sarah Schrader, who took first in science, second in composition and third in language arts.

Austin Taing of DCMS took first place in mathematics and third place in science. Madison LeRoy of DCMS earned first in language arts and third in composition. Drakes Creek’s David Fouts was first in social studies and third in arts & humanities. The other first-place winner for DCMS was Callie Allison in arts & humanities.

Runner-up Russellville took first in composition (Sarah Fox) and in Future Problem Solving.

Kentucky Wesleyan releases dean’s list

Kentucky Wesleyan College announced the following Warren County students were named to the dean’s list for the 2006 fall semester.

Cristy Ashburn, daughter of Sidney and Annette Ashburn of Bowling Green, is a sophomore middle grades education major and a 2005 graduate of Warren East High School.

Erin Grinstead, daughter of Gary and Anita Grinstead of Smiths Grove, is a junior biology major and a 2004 graduate of Warren East High School.

Located in Owensboro, Kentucky Wesleyan College is a four-year, United Methodist Church affiliated, co-educational institution offering a wide range of majors in the liberal arts, as well as specialized programs in communication arts and criminal justice.
