After her first shot, Greenwood’s Lauren Lamb knew it was going to be a good night.
That first shot, which was a straight-away 3-pointer, ended up being the first points of the Lady Gators’ 82-56 win Monday over visiting Hopkinsville. It also was the first of six treys by Lamb, who finished with a game-high 28 points.
Lamb finished a perfect 6-of-6 from behind the arc and 11-of-15 from the field. Not too many players enjoy nights like that, but when asked if she was in the zone, she replied “not really.”
“Once I hit the first shot, the rest really just seemed to fall,” Lamb said. “In practice, my teammates always tell me to shoot it. We went out there tonight and they just kept telling me to shoot.”
Greenwood began to pull away early in the second quarter thanks to a 10-0 run that saw a two-point lead balloon to 25-13.
The Lady Gators never relinquished their double-digit lead, building it to as much as 28 points in the second half.
“I told the girls before the game that we have 10 games left and I really challenged them to step up, and I think I really questioned their pride before they went on the court tonight,” Greenwood coach Ken Waddell said. “I’m really proud at how everyone stepped up.”
While Lamb was taking care of business from the perimeter, Richi Njoku and Amanda Walden were handling things down low. The Lady Gators outrebounded Hopkinsville 47-27.
Njoku finished with a double-double, scoring 15 while pulling down 11 rebounds. Walden finished with nine rebounds.
Hopkinsville coach Tonya Wells was disappointed with her team’s defensive effort, but also knows it’s going to be tough when a team is shooting as well as Greenwood was.
“They’re a very good fundamental team. They pass and spread the ball around well and they shoot it well,” Wells said. “They did a good job of hitting 3’s. They were the better team and it showed.”
The Lady Tigers were led in scoring by Jenida Kendrick, who had 21 points.
Greenwood (12-5) will travel to Edmonson County on Thursday while Hopkinsville (7-12) will play host to University Heights on Saturday.
