Two teenagers were arrested Tuesday night after a shooting outside Greenwood Mall.

Police said the 17-year-old driver of a vehicle, using a .22-caliber handgun, shot a 14-year-old passenger in the back seat of his vehicle. The 14-year-old’s injury is not life threatening, said Officer Jerry Corbitt, public information officer for the Bowling Green Police Department.

The juvenile was shot in the right shoulder, he said.

The 17-year-old Bowling Green boy was charged at 9:57 p.m. with first-degree assault and tampering with physical evidence. He admitted to picking up the shell casing from the shooting and throwing it somewhere in the mall parking lot, according to a city police report.

Tyson Isaiah Barnett, 18, 432 Combs Ave., was charged with tampering with physical evidence. Barnett was in the back seat of the vehicle when the shooting occurred, according to the report. Barnett was charged at 9:40 p.m.

&#8220This subject (Barnett) said immediately after the shooting, the gun was tossed back to him and he was told to do something with the gun,” according to the report.

Barnett told police that because he was scared, he hid the gun in the bushes. Barnett also told police he got rid of some marijuana in the mall parking lot.

Police officers at the scene located the gun in some bushes outside the mall, Corbitt said.

Following the shooting, police cars lined the entrance of the mall near the Lifeway Christian Store, cordoning off much of the sidewalk with yellow police tape.

The victim was taken by ambulance to The Medical Center, and at least four people were taken in police cars, though it was unclear if they were suspects or witnesses.

The call to 911 came at about 6:15 p.m., Corbitt said, and witness reports indicate at least two shots were fired.

Barnett initially told police they were outside the vehicle when they heard two shots fired and saw the juvenile fall to the ground, according to the police report.

Another witness, who was not charged, said the victim exited the mall when he was shot by an unknown person. Both said the victim was then taken to a mall patio to wait for police.

Police interviewed a number of witnesses at the scene and at the police station following the shooting, according to the report.

A witness who was in the vehicle saw the victim fall to the ground as he attempted to exit the vehicle and heard people shouting inside the vehicle, according to the report. He was then lifted back into the car.

Another witness told police her daughter had been out with Barnett the past weekend, and that he’d shot a gun out the window while they were on their way home, according to the report.

The police report gave no indication of motive.

The juvenile is being held at the Warren County Juvenile Detention Center; Barnett is in Warren County Regional Jail on a $10,000 surety bond.
