From wire to wire, Greenwood showed why it’s poised to win its fifth consecutive district title as it rolled over Warren Central on Thursday night in a 2-0 (25-7, 25-16) victory.

From the time the Lady Dragons’ Cassandra Cline hit the first serve long and out of bounds, Greenwood took the lead and never looked back. Before Central could catch its collective breath, the Lady Gators were up 10-3 and on their way to an easy 25-7 first match victory.

&#8220In district games, we don’t want to give points away,” Greenwood coach Allen Whittinghill said. &#8220We want to see what they can do to us and see how we can play defense off that.”

Even when Greenwood gave back the serve, Warren Central rarely took advantage, struggling to put together any offensive runs.

&#8220We passed extremely poor, but Greenwood served very well,” Central coach Craig Anderson said. &#8220If you don’t pass well then you’re not going to set, and if you can’t set, then you have no offense at all. Then basically you’re just hitting the ball over for free.”

The Lady Dragons put up a much better fight in the second match, staying within striking distance through the first 17 points. With the score at 10-7, Greenwood began to slowly pull away. With the score at 19-12 Anderson called a timeout to try and spark a rally, but it was too late.

Greenwood quickly rattled off six of the next 10 points to win 25-16.

Although his team lost, Anderson says he was proud of the way his team picked up its play in the second match.

&#8220I told the girls that it’s a little matter of character,” Anderson said. &#8220If you’re going to show character, you come out and compete.”

The win was Greenwood’s sixth straight and 11th in the past 12 matches.

The Lady Gators recently won their host tournament this past weekend, and Whittinghill is pushing the team to maintain its momentum, especially in preparation for the Tournament of Champions this weekend in LaVergne, Tenn.

&#8220We were pretty hot off that, and we’ve got a pretty good tournament this weekend, so we’re trying to keep our game up,” he said.

Greenwood was led in kills by Lauren Gipson with six. Senior setter Tracie Phillips put up 21 of the team’s assist and Lizzi Beal paced the Lady Gators with seven digs.

Warren Central (6-9) returns to action Tuesday at Ohio County.
