Buckhead unique and fast-casual

This week, instead of just one visit to one of our local eating establishments, I ate twice at the fast-casual Buckhead Cafe – once for breakfast and once for dinner. I could end the review right here with one word: UNIQUE!

To begin with, where else can you get breakfast pizza, panini or a rock’n chicken salad all in a place that’s so hip it defines hip.

The music on my morning visit was peppy and upbeat. Seventies Motown mixed with ’60s bebop. Coupled with a mocha latte (a shot of espresso, chocolate and steamed milk) and a cappuccino muffin, even Sleepy of the seven dwarfs would wake up to take a class at Western Kentucky University.

At Buckhead, you order at the counter and are alerted your food is ready by a vibrating pager. The waitress behind the counter was gracious and playful, even after I changed my order twice.

I had trouble deciding between the peanut butter and banana French toast or the sausage and egg breakfast pizza. See what I mean by unique?

The pizza included small chunks of scrambled eggs, sausage, salsa and cheese. My expectations were a predominately egg, sausage and cheese taste with salsa as a flavor enhancer. The salsa and cheese overwhelmed each bite, with bits of scrambled egg and sausage acting as secondary flavors. If you like a Mexican flavor in the morning, this is a delicious way to start your day. But if, like me, you prefer traditional breakfast flavors, I would opt for one of their many egg sandwiches or French toast.

During my evening visit, my dining companion ordered the salad and panini combination. Her portabella mushroom sandwich was served on toasted, seven-grain panini bread with mozzarella cheese, roasted red pepper and garlic, and balsamic vinaigrette. Again, this is so unique my spell check doesn’t recognize some of these words.

The crunch of the toast, coupled with the tender, marinated mushroom and the roasted red pepper, made for a distinctive flavor combination she thoroughly enjoyed. Her salad was a combination of mixed greens and small raw veggies, except for the full-size cherry tomatoes and large bites of cucumber. She’s had this before and pointed out that while this makes for a visually pleasing presentation, the small portions coupled with the larger portions makes it hard to eat without taking the time to cut the tomatoes and cucumbers.

I had already eaten a meal at home, so I ordered a chocolate brownie. The brownie was almost an even blend of moist chocolate density on the bottom with a thick, sugary chocolate glaze-like frosting on the top. If you believe chocolate should be a food group of its own, as I do, this is the brownie for you. Buckhead has a variety of baked goods from muffins and brownies to cheesecake and full-sized cakes. There’s something for every sweet tooth.

During my visits, there was a sign in the entrance: &#8220excuse the mess while we renovate.” I didn’t see any thing out of the ordinary at breakfast or dinner. My experience was a colorful, clean, well-maintained, welcoming environment. The only glitch in my dining experience was the waitress at the counter who wasn’t helping me was applying lip-gloss from a palate while I ordered.

My dining companion noted that what she liked about Buckhead was the delicious, quality, gourmet food served quickly and reasonably priced. When I visited its Web site, it turns out there is a term for this in the restaurant industry. It’s called &#8220fast-casual.” You can dine in or carry out, fax your order in or use the convenient drive through as well.

Buckhead is definitely a one of a kind for Bowling Green and well worth a try, perhaps for breakfast, lunch, dinner and, of course, desert!
