Barren County ends losing streak to GHS

GLASGOW – Rivalries are supposed to be competitive, but for the last few seasons, Barren County has come close but not overcome Glasgow.

Entering last night’s contest, the Trojans hadn’t claimed victory since 1998, when they slipped past the Scotties 23-22.

Barren County rekindled the fire between the two last night with a 26-23 overtime victory over the host Scotties.

The Trojans claimed victory on a 1-yard bull run of a touchdown on third-and-goal by senior fullback Justin Sowers. The touchdown came after the Scotties thought they claimed victory with what appeared to be a block of a Barren County field goal attempt on fourth down.

A roughing the kicker penalty on Glasgow gave the Trojans new life, and Sowers found pay dirt.

The Scotties took a 23-20 lead in the extra frame on a 25-yard field goal by junior kicker Drew Kuzma.

&#8220I’m speechless,” Sowers said. &#8220I’ve been playing football for 10 years for that and it’s just overwhelming. We got up on (Glasgow) and they came back, but we just showed our heart and Barren County pride.”

Barren County got out to a lead it would hold through regulation when junior tailback Bo Edwards took a shovel pass from junior quarterback Blake Crabtree eight yards for a touchdown in the first quarter. Edwards would make good on the two-point conversion as well as he dove into the end zone.

The Scotties would find life after junior linebacker Lamar Howard recovered a Trojan fumble at Barren County’s 22-yard line with 9:58 remaining before halftime.

Howard would finish off the Glasgow drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. Sophomore quarterback Tyler Lindsey was tackled short of the goal line on the two-point attempt.

The Scotties seemingly grabbed the momentum to begin the second half when junior tailback Corey Witcher took the opening kick of the second half 63 yards into Trojan territory. The drive stalled with a missed 26-yard field goal attempt by Kuzma.

Barren County jumped back with the momentum with third-quarter touchdowns by wide receiver Nick Compton on an 80 yard catch and a two-yard scamper by junior tailback Tyler Miller.

Glasgow would soon regain the momentum.

&#8220A little bit was fatigue, but Glasgow was winning the field position game,” Trojans coach William Howard said. &#8220Every time they got the ball they were on the 50 and we would get the ball inside our 20. It’s hard for us to sustain drives of 80, 90 yards.”

Lamar Howard’s cramp in the third quarter, one of just a handful for the game, set the Scotties back in the third quarter, but Glasgow would tie the game with fourth-quarter touchdown runs from sophomore tailback Blake Perkins and Lamar Howard.

&#8220We wanted to play for overtime because I thought we were moving the ball well,” Glasgow coach Billy Lindsey said. &#8220They were getting tired and we stopped them the first time, but it’s just hard to stop them again.”

While the win brings new life into the rivalry, it also brings new life to the Trojans’ season. Barren County moves to 1-1 while Glasgow falls to 0-2.

&#8220It’s great for the community and the winner gets bragging rights for a year,” Howard said. &#8220In the scheme of things for us, it’s just a game to get better.”
