Art

  • The 16th annual Women in the Arts Exhibit is from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday and Saturday at The Medical Center. Categories include paintings, works on paper, fiber works, sculptures and photography. Submitted works are judged and cash prizes will be awarded. Artwork is available for purchase. Twenty percent of each sale goes to the Capitol Arts Center’s Community Outreach Artists in Residence program.
  • Paintings by Dhanya Nair are in the Community Room of the Bowling Green Area Chamber of Commerce until May 1.

    The Bowling Green/Warren County Art Teachers’ Art is featured in the Health & Wellness Center of Greenwood Mall.

    Ms. Marsha’s Neighborhood, mixed media artwork created by Marsha Heidbrink, is being shown in the Cancer Center of The Medical Center until May 15.

Campus

  • The Kentucky Library and Museum, in partnership with VSA Arts of Kentucky, presents &#8220Side by Side 2006,” a collaborative exhibition of artwork created by young artists with disabilities and local artists. An opening reception is at 6 p.m. Friday at the Garden Gallery at the Kentucky Museum Western Kentucky University. The exhibit runs through May 31.
  • Hardin Planetarium at Western’s spring program is about &#8220A Brief History of the UFO Phenomenon.” The program answers questions about UFOs and several classic cases. Programs are at 2:30 p.m. Sunday and April 30 and at 7:30 p.m. today, Tuesday, April 27, and May 2 and 4. Doors open 15 minutes before the program begins. No one is admitted after the lecture begins and children under 12 should be accompanied by an adult. The program is free.

Music

  • The Bowling Green-Warren County Symphony Orchestra, directed by Bill Scott, performs its season finale 7:30 p.m. April 27 at First Baptist Church and features the Bowling Green-Western Choral Society and the Western Kentucky University Choirs. Tickets, which are $18 for adults and $5 for students, are available online at www.bgwso.org and at the door on the evening of the concert.
  • &#8220At the Hop,” featuring rock ‘n’ roll music by The Countdowns from Pine Knob Theatre, is at 7 p.m. Friday at the Grayson County Middle School Auditorium in Leitchfield. Tickets are $10. Proceeds benefit Jordan’s Gait Therapeutic Riding Stables, a 2006 public relations project of Grayson County High School DECA. For information, call (270) 879-8190 or see www.the countdowns.com.

  • The American Red Cross has a blood drive from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Friday at its office, 430 Center St. Additional drives are from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday at Logan Memorial Hospital and three drives for Greek Week at Western Kentucky University’s Preston Health and Activity Center from noon to 6 p.m. Monday and Tuesday and from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Wednesday.
  • Russellville Masonic Lodge No. 17’s spring all-you-can-eat ham and egg Breakfast is from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. May 6. The menu includes ham, eggs, biscuits and gravy, hash brown casserole, jams and jellies, coffee, milk and orange juice. Tickets are available at the door for $5 or from a lodge member.
  • The Park City post office has a seminar from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. April 28 about turning unwanted items into cash by using eBay. Park City, Cave City, Mammoth Cave, Bee Spring, Hiseville and Rocky Hill post offices are sponsoring this event. Chris Bixler from Western Kentucky University’s Small Business Development Center is helping provide information, including DVDs, handouts and a computer presentation on how to do business with the Postal Service in conjunction with eBay.   • Independence Bank, 2415 Nashville Road, is sponsoring &#8220Bring Your Dog Day” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday. Activities will include a dog show for mixed-breed large and small dogs, and pedigreed large and small dogs, in both adult and children’s divisions. Registration is from 9 a.m. to 10:30 p.m., the dog show begins at 11 a.m. and winners are announced at noon. Prizes are furnished by Petco and Hill’s Pet Nutrition. The Bowling Green-Warren County Humane Society will also have dogs available for adoption and Independence Bank paying for half the adoption cost. Masters Boarding Kennels is giving dog training demonstrations.
  • Tickets are on sale for Big James and the Chicago Playboys at Ellis Place on April 29. Tickets are $15 for members and $20 for non-members.   • The Daughters of the American Revolution and Daughters of the American Colonists have a workshop from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at the Kentucky Museum to assist anyone who is interest in joining the DAR, DAC, Sons of the American Revolution, Colonial Dames of XVII Century, Huguenots or Magna Charta societies.   • Tickets are on sale for the May 13 Charity Affair VII to benefit Riverview at Hobson Grove. Proceeds from the evening ($35 of each $50 ticket) will be used to help restore the historic house museum. Artwork is on display April 28 to May 11 at 410 Park Row. For more information, call 843-5565.
  • A spring book sale to benefit the Goodnight Memorial Library is Tuesday through April 29 all day each day. Several thousand books are available at a cost of 25 cents and up. Proceeds will fund new library equipment purchases. For more information, call 586-8397.
  • Old Union School’s 10th annual auction and barbecue supper is from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday at Phil Moore Park. The barbecue supper and silent auction begin at 4 p.m. and the live auction follows the meal. Lots of items of local interest will be available, including meals, services, gift certificates and more. Hundreds of unique items will also be up for auction, including many one-of-a-kind pieces of sports and celebrity memorabilia such as a coffee mug prop from &#8220Central Perk,” the coffee shop set on the hit television show &#8220Friends.” Check out www.oldunionschool.com for an up-to-date list of auction items.

    Sponsored by the Landmark Association, two seatings are offered Sunday – at 1:30 p.m. and 4 p.m. – for a Victorian tea at the home of Carrie Taylor, 610 Main St. It includes a brief tour and a historic play about Bowling Green’s seamstress extraordinaire, presented by the Kentucky Historical Society Museum Theater entitled &#8220Styles and the Gistofit: The Times of Carrie Taylor.” The cost is $20.   • Southern Kentucky Regional Farmers Market in Bowling Green is open in Fairview Plaza. The market features Kentucky grown products, including in-season vegetables, bedding plants, honey and baked goods. Hours are 7 a.m. to noon Saturdays and 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Tuesdays through October.     Historic Riverview at Hobson Grove is celebrating the 40th anniversary of the effort to save the home, now a historic house museum, from 1:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday. The home is at 1100 W. Main Ave. in Bowling Green’s Hobson Grove Park. For more information, call 843- 5565.

  • The Bowling Green Parks Preschool-Playschool Program is planning a reunion and retirement celebration for Scottie Halter and Sue Smith, marking 25 years.
