James Walter Cowles, 62, of Brownsville died at 10:32 p.m. March 5, 2006, at Greenview Regional Hospital.

The Edmonson County native was a retired self-employed painter and a member of United Trinity Baptist Church. He was a son of the late James Wilbur Cowles and Betty Wells Minnix. He was preceded in death by a sister, Kaye Fields.

Funeral is at 10 a.m. Thursday at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Home, Broadway Avenue chapel, with burial in Evergreen Cemetery in Louisville. Visitation is in progress until 9 p.m. today and is from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Diabetes Association or American Kidney Foundation.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna Zackery Martinez and her husband, Jesus, of Bowling Green; two sons, Danny Ray Cowles of Bowling Green and James Richard Cowles of Indianapolis; a stepdaughter, Clauda Howard and her husband, Mautie, of Edmonson County; two stepsons, Ricky Dale Roddy Sr. and his wife, Jean, of Louisville, and Jerry Wayne Lee Sr. of Bowling Green; three brothers, George T. Cowles and his wife, Barbara, and Donny Ray Cowles Sr. and his wife, Joann, all of Smiths Grove, and Raymond D. Cowles of Bowling Green; three sisters, Cora Ferguson, Mary Jane Montgomery and Dora Lee Richards, all of Bowling Green; two half brothers, Wilbur Cowles Jr. of Bowling Green and Mike Cowles of Michigan; two half sisters, Wilma Embry and her husband, Floyd, and Pam Porter and her husband, David, all of Bowling Green; 13 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and 25 nieces and nephews.
