Her mother was a freedom-loving woman who took Dinnie along on several attempts to escape across the Ohio River. They were caught every time. After emancipation, she worked as a laundress, then as a maid at Louisville’s Neighborhood House. She became friends with Elizabeth Wilson, a young social worker, and, through their friendship, Dinnie’s story has been preserved. In one sense, Dinnie was an ordinary person who was never rich or famous. But, as a representative of all black Kentucky women who worked hard to make their way in spite of prejudice and poverty in the late 19th and 20th centuries, she is anything but ordinary. The program is sponsored by the State Street Baptist Church Sunday school.
