http://Theatreofillusion.comKevin Spencer and his wife Cindy (left) are touring the country, performing in many of the nation's top theaters and performing arts centers. Their production, Theatre of Illusion, is one of the largest touring illusion shows on the road today, according to the organization's Web site.

There’s something about performing in an old theater that excites Kevin Spencer.

&#8220It’s something that’s incredible,” he said. &#8220They have such great magic history.”

So it’s easy to understand why Spencer is thrilled about his upcoming performance at the Plaza Theatre in Glasgow. The Plaza, in its first season since it was renovated last year, used to be a vaudeville touring house and movie house.

&#8220We’re excited about coming to Glasgow,” he said. &#8220Come in ready to have a good time.”

The Spencers Theatre of Illusion is at 2 p.m. Sunday at the theater, 115 E. Main St. in Glasgow. Tickets are $25 for front section seats, $20 for rear section seats and $15 for balcony seats and for children ages 12 and under no matter where they sit.

Plaza Theatre Director Steve Jones said there were several reasons why he thought The Spencers would be a good fit for Glasgow.

&#8220We needed something geared toward the family – not that our other shows weren’t, but they were more for adults. We wanted to offer a matinee show,” he said. &#8220The rest of the shows are all musical acts. (The upcoming ‘An Evening with Groucho’) is more stand-up comedy with some music. We wanted to do something different. We wanted to give more variety for the season.”

Spencer agreed the show, which usually runs almost two hours with intermission, is family-friendly.

&#8220Everybody could enjoy this show on a different level and walk away having something to talk about,” he said. &#8220We want adults to know that this isn’t a kiddie magic show. The adults who come to the show will have a great time as well.”

The Spencers – which also includes Spencer’s wife, Cindy – were last in southcentral Kentucky nearly four years ago with a performance at Western Kentucky University’s Van Meter Auditorium.

&#8220The show has changed,” he said. &#8220We try to do things people might not have seen before or do in a new or different way. We’re constantly looking for new illusions to put in the show. We call it Theater of Illusion because of the combination of our love for theater and our passion for magic. It’s like combining a Broadway show and the high tech show that magic has become.”

The Spencers bring members of the audience onstage to help with the illusions.

&#8220We never know what they’re going to do,” he said. &#8220Illusions onstage take on a whole new significance.”

Spencer described the show as &#8220fun, light-hearted and romantic.” He plans to end the Glasgow show with an underwater escape.

&#8220I love ending the show with a little bit of tension,” he said. &#8220You’re getting to know audience and they’re getting to know you. You evoke a real emotional response in the crowd.”

Now in their 20th year on the road, the Virginia-based couple travel with their act 10 months a year, doing five shows a week. Last year they went coast to coast and even overseas to various places including Hong Kong and Taiwan.

&#8220We love traveling. We love that part of the job,” he said. &#8220After the show I always hit the lobby. I love to meet the people. One of the greatest things about our show is meeting the people of America. There are so many different cultures here that when you travel the United States you get to meet so many different kinds of people and eat so many different kinds of food.”

Being an illusionist is a dream come true for Spencer, who grew up in Tennessee, Mississippi and Indiana.

&#8220I always dreamed of doing this,” he said. &#8220I told my mom I was going to be a magician.”

The best part of that dream, he said, is that it’s something he and his wife can share.

&#8220You usually come home and explain to your spouse what you did today. I get to do the thing I love with the person I love,” he said. &#8220It’s a great blessing for us.”
