GLASGOW – When LaVonda Johnson played at Warren East High School, she helped lead the Lady Raiders to plenty of victories. On Monday, she was trying to deny her former school a win.
Johnson locked up with her former school for the first time as head coach at Glasgow and watched the Lady Raiders rally from a fourth-quarter deficit to defeat her Lady Scotties 66-63. Glasgow (1-4) was unable to overcome eight fourth-quarter turnovers and another huge night from WEHS freshman Ashley Rainey.

“It’s hard to accept, but sometimes you learn a lot from losing,” Johnson said. “I think our girls really worked hard and were competitive. We just have to get them over the hump.”
Despite facing her former team, Johnson said she looked at Monday’s matchup as just another game.
“It was a good experience, but I try not to get into all the hoorah or whatever,” she said. “I don’t care who it is, I’m just trying to win. But I can understand people getting into that.”
Warren East coach Angie Anderson, whose sister played with Johnson, said it was fun to match up with the former Lady Raider.
“She is just a standout person,” Anderson said. “Glasgow couldn’t have picked a better coach to lead their girls’ program. I tried to get her at East, but no teaching positions were open. I think she has earned her way here and she certainly had them ready against us tonight.”
Glasgow was ready for the challenge, jumping ahead 6-2 early. Warren East (2-3) took control late in the first quarter and had a 22-17 lead at the end of one.

The Lady Raider lead was 25-19 after a jumper by Katie Bonds, but Glasgow closed the half with an 18-7 surge to build a 37-32 advantage at the break.
Warren East briefly regained the advantage 42-41 on a jumper by Andrea Moore midway through the third quarter, but again Glasgow answered. A 9-4 spurt gave the Lady Scotties a 50-46 lead heading into the final quarter.
The Lady Raiders regained the lead, 55-53, on a nifty post move by Julie Crabtree, but Glasgow bounced back with a 3 from Ashley Johnson to make the score 56-55 with 2:21 left.
After the two teams exchanged baskets, the Lady Raiders took the lead for good on a Rainey three-point play. Glasgow turned the ball over on its next two possessions and Rainey hit three free throws to stretch the margin to 63-58. The Lady Scotties couldn’t get any closer than two points the rest of the way.
“Our kids fought and fought and found a way to win,” Anderson said. “We needed this win for confidence. This was big for them to see that hard work does pay off.”
Rainey led Warren East with 22 points – including seven points in the final five minutes – and 16 rebounds.
“That says something about who she is as a kid,” Anderson said. “She just wants to win and she is willing to do whatever it takes. We had kids that got her the ball when they needed to get her the ball and she knew what to do with it.”
Johnson said that she was impressed with Rainey.
“I joked with somebody to make sure she didn’t break any of my records,” Johnson said. “She is going to break a lot of records and is going to be a well-respected player. I respect her right now. She is just going to get that much better as the year goes along.”
Moore added 15 points and Amanda Bonds finished with 12 points for Warren East.
Ashley Johnson led the Lady Scotties with 19 points. Paige Lee added 16 points and 12 rebounds for Glasgow.
Warren East will host Greenwood at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Glasgow will host Monroe County at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
