Art
- The Capitol Arts Alliance and the Cancer Treatment Center of The Medical Center have partnered to feature a bimonthly exhibit of art in patient waiting areas. Tom Poole’s watercolors will be on display through November.
- Also in November, paintings by Laurin Notheisen will be on display in the classroom of the Health and Wellness Center in Greenwood Mall.
- “Junkyards, Woodpiles and Weed Patches,” paintings by Neil Peterie, will be on exhibit in the Houchens Gallery, Capitol Arts Center, through Tuesday. “Kiwi Flair,” mixed-media works by Fleur Whitaker, will be on exhibit in the Mezzanine Gallery of the Capitol through Friday.
Campus
- A holiday bazaar will be from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday at Downing University Center Mezzanine. Events include various crafts for sale, music, door prizes, refreshments and more. For more information, call Kimberly Sowders at 745-5793.
- The Southern Kentucky Book Fest, in conjunction with Western Kentucky University athletics and Charles M. Moore Insurance, will sponsor “Books and Baskets” at the WKU men’s basketball home game today at E.A. Diddle Arena. Game time is 7 p.m. and gates open at 6 p.m. Bring a new or gently used children’s book to entrances 1 or 4 and get one reserved seat ticket free. - Western Kentucky University Flute Choir and Double Reed Ensemble will perform a free recital at 3 p.m. Sunday. Phi Mu Alpha will present a “Night of Music” at 7:30 p.m. Sunday and Western Kentucky University seniors Jason Gibson and Daniel Thomas will have a brass recital at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Guest guitarist Stanley Yates will have a concert at 5 p.m. Wednesday and a Clarinet/Saxophone Studio Recital will be at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. All the events are in the Ivan Wilson Fine Arts Center Recital Hall and are free and open to the public.
- “Native Americans in Kentucky: 11,500 Years Ago to Present,” a six-panel display created by students in an applied archaeology course, will be in the Downing University Center lobby through Nov. 30.

- Fountain Square Players will present “Caught in the Net,” a farce by Ray Cooney, beginning today. A Laurence Olivier Award nominee for Best Comedy 2003, it is a sequel to “Run For Your Wife.” The play will be at 8 p.m. today through Saturday and at 3 p.m. Sunday. - Historic preservation specialist Randy Shipp from Lexington will discuss the distinctive post-World War II prefabricated homes designed by former custom lighting fixture designer Foster Gunnison at 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Bowling Green has several of these specimens on Josephine Street. A 30-minute lecture at the Bowling Green Public Library will include slides followed by a stroll through the Josephine Street neighborhood. Participants should wear comfortable shoes. - The movie “Store Wars: When Wal-Mart Comes to Town” will be presented at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Capitol Arts Center. The documentary looks at what happened in a small Virginia town when retail giant Wal-Mart comes knocking. The ensuing debate pits neighbor against neighbor. The film follows the All Kentucky Juried Art Show at the Houchens Gallery from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. For more information, call Robin Zeigler at 842-1953.
- The 13th annual Old Fashioned Christmas Walk and Bazaar will be from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at Christ United Methodist Church, 716 Cave Mill Road. On hand will be crafts, baked goods and breakfast and lunch for sale. A silent auction and a display of vintage items will also be featured.
- Downtown Franklin merchants will have open houses from noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday, with discounts, door prizes and refreshments offered at most stores.
Trinity Freewill Baptist Church Family Life Center will be the site of a benefit yard sale for infant Bella Shoemaker. The yard sale will be from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday and 7 a.m. to noon Saturday. Her father is the brother of the church’s youth minister. The infant has an inoperable brain tumor. - American Red Cross holds blood drives from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each Friday at its office at 430 Center St. Additional drives will be from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at the office; from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. Monday at Glasgow Christian Academy, 600 Old Calvary Drive; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday at Western Kentucky University’s Downing University Center.
- Tickets are on sale now for the Real Simple Festival of Giving at the Greenwood Mall on Dec. 4. The $5 tickets will make shoppers eligible for special store discounts, gift wrapping and door prizes from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. that day. Proceeds from ticket sales, which are available from non-profit organizations and participating schools, will benefit those groups. Tickets also are on sale at the mall customer service center.
- The first Emergency Service Award Breakfast, administered by Kiwanis Club of Bowling Green and presented by South Central Bank, at 7 a.m. Wednesday at Knights of Columbus Hall, 911 Searcy Way. The event will honor those in the community who serve in life-saving and protective capacities. A program will be from 7:30 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. Tickets are $10 and can be ordered by calling 780-5228.
- The Toy Bowl will begin at 10 a.m. Saturday at Greenwood High School. The day will have championship games for all divisions in the Warren County Youth Football League.
- The Kentucky National Guard Family Support Group will have two events Saturday at the National Guard Armory on Morgantown Road. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., it will be Kids Day events. Children will have lunch and make crafts to send to soldiers overseas. The event also will be taped to send to soldiers. At 6 p.m., the Vette City Wrestlers will have a match to benefit the support group, with a guest appearance by Bill Dundee. Donations of food for concessions are needed. - Bowling Green High School parents, students and siblings, members of the community, and other schools’ clubs, with sponsors, are invited to BGHS’ sixth annual International Coffee House sponsored Nov. 15 by French, ESL, German, Spanish and Future Educators of America clubs, the Alive Center of Bowling Green and the Bowling Green Womans club. International entertainment will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., with international food from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Entertainment and food will be from France, Morocco, West Africa, Africa, America, Spain, Latin America, Bosnia, American Indian, Vietnam, Cambodia, Thailand, North America, India and Germany.
- The National Corvette Museum will offer a $1 special admission to all military personnel, firefighters, police officers and their immediate families during November. A military or service ID should be presented for admission.
- The Boys & Girls Club of Bowling Green will benefit from advance ticket sales and walk-up game night sales for the WKU men’s basketball exhibition game vs. Bellarmine at 7 p.m. today at E.A. Diddle Arena. Tickets are $10 when purchased from the Boys & Girls Club in advance. Business sponsorships are available. - The American Cave Conservation Association, Hart of Kentucky Grotto and Wittenberg University Speleological Society will have a cave restoration project from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday at Hidden River Cave, 119 E. - Bowling Green Parks and Recreation will accept registration and fees for the first 58 teams in the adult basketball league. - A Shaker Breakfast, hosted by the Shaker Museum, will be Saturday. - UAW Local 2164 will host Joe Hemphrey, Kentucky state service officer for Kentucky’s Veterans of Foreign Wars, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. every third Tuesday at the hall at 712 Plum Springs Loop. He will be available to discuss things such as vision care, speeding up the claims process and registering for care at the VA clinic.
