Hillvue bringing in BarlowGirl

In a rock ‘n’ roll world of sexy outfits and sensationalized love affairs, a trio of young, female Christian rockers is stepping out of the mold.
“Our main topics include trusting God, purity and our stand on not dating,” the gals of BarlowGirl say on their Web site at www.barlowgirl.com.
Not dating? At all?
That’s right, say the ladies, who were the best-selling new Christian group in the country last year, and who will be in concert at Hillvue Heights Church at 7 p.m. Sept. 29.
The women of BarlowGirl believe “God’s desire for us is to keep our hearts whole and pure until he shows us who is for us,” said group member Rebecca Barlow, who makes up BarlowGirl with her sisters, Alyssa and Lauren.
“He will do that through friendship,” Rebecca said. “We have a lot of guy friends and we hang out in groups, but there’s no pressure there.”
BarlowGirl cut its first album, which was self-titled, last year on Fervent Records.
Since then, they’ve been touring the country with the band’s managers – their mom and dad.
The Barlow sisters write their own songs and play their own instruments.
Rebecca, 25, is lead guitarist and sings back-up vocals. Alyssa, 23, sings lead vocals and plays bass guitar. Lauren, the group’s drummer, is 20 and also sings lead vocals.
The ladies say they’re stunned by their success.
“You make an album and you write songs for your friends and family and it’s kind of exciting when it sells,” Rebecca said.
She feels God has blessed the trio, who didn’t set out to be musicians but felt that’s what they were called to do.
And “it’s amazing just hearing what people have to say” after a performance, Rebecca said. “It’s amazing how God can use different songs to affect different people.”
Keith Scarborough, worship pastor at Hillvue, said he’s glad BarlowGirl can come to Hillvue.
“It is going to be an outreach ministry for our church,” he said. “Their music reaches a real broad audience, (but) mainly I would say young people from the ages of 17 to 30, an audience that listens to more upbeat contemporary music,” like what is played at the church during regular services.
Scarborough said BarlowGirl’s message is “very important” for young women whose “role models have been VH-1 and MTV.”
“It’s great to see the Barlow girls stepping out and doing great music but also having that message of modesty,” Scarborough added.
Advance tickets for the BarlowGirl concert are $12 each or $10 for groups of 10 or more and can be bought at Hillvue, Family Christian Stores or LifeWay Christian Stores. Tickets may be bought at the door, but will likely cost more there, Scarborough said.
The concert is being brought to Bowling Green by Hillvue and WAY-FM, a Christian radio station that broadcasts out of Nashville and can be heard locally on 88.1.
