Hayes honored

Greenwood High School student John W. Hayes of Bowling Green has been named a United States National Award Winner in Leadership and Service by the United States Achievement Academy. Criteria for the honor, which recognizes fewer than 10 percent of all American high school students, include academic performance, interest and aptitude, leadership qualities, dependability and a recommendation from a teacher or director.

Martin Jr. earns law degree, with honors

Jeffery Thomas Martin Jr. received a juris doctor from George Washington University Law School in May. He graduated with honors and received the Joel B. Rosenthal Commercial Law Award and the American Bankruptcy Institute Medal for Excellence in Bankruptcy Studies. He is the son of Jeff and Susan Martin of Bowling Green and the grandson of Sonny and Betty Haynes and Mary Alice Martin.

Local students among Governors Scholars

Gov. Ernie Fletcher recently recognized 73 students selected as the 2005 Commonwealth Governors Scholars, each of whom has created a record of academic and personal achievement despite significant challenges in their lives. Among them are Melissa Durham of Warren East High School, Ashley Elmore of Warren Central High School and Leslie Whitaker of Greenwood High School.

Shepler earns degree from Washington U.

Carrie Gillaspie Shepler recently earned a doctor of philosophy in chemistry degree from Washington State University. Her doctoral research topic was The biogeochemical transformation of U(VI) oxyhydroxide to U(VI) phosphate solids. She is the granddaughter of Robert H. and Jane Gillaspie of Bowling Green.

Buckman selected

for statesman school

Aaron Buckman, a junior at Warren Central High School, was selected to attend the 2005 Junior Statesman Summer School at Stanford University in Palo Alto, Calif. He is the son of Gordon Buckman and Darlene Raymer and grandson of Dr. and Mrs. William Buckman of Bowling Green and Mr. and Mrs. Murray Whitson of Greenville.

Laura Vilines named to WU deans list

Laura Vilines, daughter of Elaine and Alan Vilines of Bowling Green, has been named to the deans list at Washington University for the spring 2005 semester. To qualify for this honor, students must earn a grade-point average of 3.5 or higher and be enrolled in at least 14 graded units.

Nichols tagged for CHF scholarship

Sarah Renee Nichols will receive the James W. and Mary Carolyn Wolfe Brite Scholarship beginning in the fall. The scholarship is open to employees of Commonwealth Health Foundation and covers tuition, books and fees for the nursing program at Western Kentucky University. Nichols is a monitor technician in the intensive care unit at The Medical Center.

Students honored

at Mid-Continent U.

Several local residents were awarded academic honors through the ADVANTAGE program at Mid-Continent University, an accelerated adult degree program. Those named to the Presidents List, who maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average, included Nancy Bunton, Ritchie Flewallen, Carey Gradner, Shelia Richardson, Judith Scott and Timothy Woodcock.

Those named to the deans list, who maintained a grade-point average between 3.3 and 3.99, included Cynthia Blackwell and Stephanie Walker.

WKUs Carmichael honored for Russia trip

John C. Carmichael, director of bands at Western Kentucky University, has been commissioned as a Kentucky Colonel of the Commonwealth by Gov. Ernie Fletcher. Carmichael received the award recently at a concert of the Southern Kentucky Band held in Basil Griffin Park.

The award was presented in recognition of the WKU Wind Ensembles invitation and performance in Russia in May. The wind ensemble was the only civilian instrumental ensemble from the United States invited by the Russian Ministry of Culture to perform at the WWII Victory over Europe celebration on May 9.

WKU students collect butterflies in Florida

A Western Kentucky University biology faculty member and six students recently traveled to Florida for a four-day butterfly collecting expedition. Jeffery Marcus, an assistant professor, and the students captured 35 butterflies that will be used to understand the genetic population structure of two species the common buckeye butterfly and the mangrove buckeye butterfly.

Local participants included undergraduate student Sarah House of Scottsville and graduate student Tia Hughes of Bowling Green.

Natcher PTO to host open house for Allen

The William H. Natcher PTO is sponsoring an open house Sunday in honor of the retirement of Connie Allen.

The reception will be at the school, 14334 Cave Mill Road, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Library plans hoedown at Chaneys Dairy Barn

Summer readers are invited Friday to celebrate the end of the Bowling Green Public Librarys reading program.

In keeping with the Western theme adopted this summer, the event will feature hoedown style activities at Chaneys Dairy Barn from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

There will be a hayride, ice cream, live music and more.

WEHS council plans to meet Monday

The Warren East High School Site-Based Decision-Making Council will have a regular meeting at 5 p.m. Monday in the school library.

The council will review programs and consider requests from faculty and students.

Vanderbilt names graduates, deans list

Vanderbilt University in Nashville recently named its spring graduates and deans list honorees.

Area graduates:

Tiffany Renee Fuller graduated summa cum laude, with a bachelor of music degree. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Randall C. Fuller of Bowling Green and was a member of Pi Kappa Lambda, a national music honor society. She received the Richard C. Cooper Award in music.

Julia Anne Jacobs graduated magna cum laude with a bachelor of science degree. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth E. Jacobs of Bowling Green.

Justin Scott Poling graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor of science degree. A member of Phi Beta Kappa, he is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John C. Poling of Alvaton.

On the deans list with a grade-point average of at least 3.5 were:

Fuller, Jacobs, Poling, Sarina K. Saheyta, daughter of Drs. Kalidas and Gul Saheyta; Seth Collin Hulsey, son of Dr. and Mrs. Timothy K. Hulsey, Kayln Forrest Bowra, daughter of Mrs. and Mrs. Steven F. Bowra, Jordan Stephanie Carver, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Steve Carver. All but Poling are from Bowling Green.

Two from Bowling Green had high honors for 4.0 GPAs. They were Evan Todd Walker, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles D. Walker of Bowling Green, and Benjamin Neel Murphy, son of Mr. and Mrs. Troy P. Murphy, all of Bowling Green.

Technical college releases deans list

Bowling Green Technical College has released its spring deans list. Students must earn at least a 3.5 grade-point average on a 4.0 scale.
