Casablanca.

Darth Vader.

They all helped make up a century of movies, and the Bowling Green Western Symphony Orchestra will help an audience remember them and many other images from Hollywood during A Night at the Movies on Feb. 10 at the Capitol Arts Theater.

The 7:30 p.m. concert will feature a great variety of music from many movies, and for anybody thats seen a lot of these movies, its going to bring back a lot of good memories, said symphony orchestra Conductor William R. Scott.

Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children and are available in advance by calling the Capitol Arts Box Office at 782-2787. They will also be available at the door.

The show will kick off with the theme from Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Thats to get everybodys attention and start off with a bang, Scott said. Then were going to start off with (music from) a silent movie farm scene.

Placards will be used to tell the audience what would be going on in the silent film. The silent film piece and all the others in the concert will be introduced by Scott Stroot, head of the theatre and dance department at Western Kentucky

University.

We used him last year when we did the Harry Potter concert and it was great, Scott said. Hes a gifted actor.

Later in the concert, Stroot will portray Professor Harold Hill as he sings Trouble in River City from The Music Man.

Stroot said he thinks an audience is going to enjoy hearing some of their favorite music during the concert, which will include movie tunes from each decade since silent films were big in the 20s.

The 30s will be represented by Somewhere Over the Rainbow from The Wizard of Oz and Taras Theme from Gone With the Wind.

Casablancas As Time Goes By will represent the 40s, and the Bowling Green Western Symphony Orchestra version will feature jazz saxophonist Mark Vinci, a guest musician from New York.

The next tune, Colonel Bogey March, will represent the 1950s.

Pieces from the 60s will include Laras Theme, from Dr. Zhivago, and Trouble in River City.

The Easy Winners, from The Sting, should bring back memories of the 70s, as should the theme to Star Wars, Scott said.

After an intermission, Mozarts Concerto for Clarinet and Orchestra, featuring WKU assistant professor of music John Cipolla on clarinet, will conjure up memories of the 80s film Out of Africa. Also representing the 80s will be Puccinis Musettas Waltz, which was featured in Moonstruck. WKU senior Amanda Biggs will be the featured singer on the piece.

Next will be the theme to Schindlers List, which opened in the 90s. It will include a violin solo by Stanislav Antonevich, who is concert master of the symphony orchestra and a violin instructor at Western Kentucky University

Finally, a medley of music from the Lord of the Rings: Return of the King, will represent the 21st century before a medley of music from recent Hollywood blockbusters wraps up the concert.

Its going to be a lot of fun, Scott said.  Daily News ·813 College St. ·PO Box 90012 ·Bowling Green, KY ·42102 ·270-781-1700
