Earth Day activities kick off this weekend

The Southern Kentucky Regional Farmers Market will have Earth Day activities Saturday.The market, open from 7 a.m. until noon at Fairview Plaza Shopping Center, will have regionally grown produce for sale, as well as a gardening workshop by the South Central Kentucky Master Gardener Association. There also will be environmental demonstrations from Mammoth Cave National Park, childrens art activities from Capitol Arts Alliance, demonstrations of wool spinning and music from Scottish fiddler Hamish Thompson.There will be recognition of Arbor Day/Earth Day at various county parks with the distribution of seedlings. They will be given at Lovers Lane Soccer Complex from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m.; Kereiakes Park from 11 a.m. to noon; RiverWalk Park from noon to 1 p.m.; Fountain Square Park from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; Preston Miller Park from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.; and Basil Griffin Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.City Arborist Jay Dougherty will give tree-planting demonstrations every hour on the hour from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Covington Woods Park.In celebration of National Arbor Day, free pine seedlings will be given away April 30 by the Public Broadcasting Service of Western Kentucky University and 10 McDonalds locations in Bowling Green, Franklin, Scottsville, Smiths Grove and Portland, Tenn. Planting and care instructions will be provided with the pine seedlings. More than 5,000 seedlings will be distributed for free beginning on the morning of April 30. Activities elsewhereBarren County From 10 a.m. to noon Saturday there will be an interpretive hike at Brigadoon State Nature Preserve through the mature forested ridges and scenic ravines overlooking the Skaggs Creek portion of Barren Lake.
