The beauty of Jacksons Orchard was disturbed Wednesday morning when a pile of garbage was discovered on the property. Someone had dumped a load of trash on a small dirt road that branches off the main road leading to the orchard. Employees discovered the pile on their way to work. Obviously this was intentional, orchard owner Bill Jackson said. Someone drove out here with the intention of dumping off their trash. Thats what bothers me. Jacksons next step was to call Western Kentucky University one piece of mail discovered in the trash was addressed to 1430 Chestnut St., a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity. A cup decorated in the fraternitys logo was also found in the pile. At least one other piece of mail, a bank statement, was addressed to John Shanton in a Maryland town, indicating that it may have been for a student from that town whose parents sent him his mail. Shanton is a member of Pi Kappa Alpha. However, mail was found addressed to other locations as well, including 1340 Chestnut St. and 1438 Chestnut St.Charley Pride, coordinator of student activities at Western, declined to comment until university officials had investigated the matter themselves. Other items in the trash pile included beer bottles, cans and boxes, magazines, fast food wrappers and a large pile of duct tape. A copy of the lease agreement for The Gables, an apartment complex located at 1909 Creason St., was also found. Todd Oser, president of Pi Kappa Alpha, said he knew nothing about the incident. No, they have not, he said when asked whether the university had contacted him about it. Jackson said he would ask the guilty party to clean up the mess, and perhaps do some extra work for him around the orchard for a day. The trash pile is near a scenic overlook where people like to come watch sunsets, Jackson said. We dont mind people coming out here and enjoying it, but this sure does take the fun out of it, he said. Daily News ·813 College St. ·PO Box 90012 ·Bowling Green, KY ·42102 ·270-781-1700
