CHC selects John Clarks work for card

Commonwealth Health Corporation selected the winner of its annual Children-in-the-Arts program.

John Clark, a student from Pembrook Elementary School in Logan County, submitted artwork that has been selected to be used on the corporations 2004 Christmas card.

Each year CHC hosts the Children-in-the Arts program and requests children in kindergarten through sixth grade throughout southcentral Kentucky submit artwork. One piece of artwork is selected annually to be used as the cover of the corporation’s Christmas card.

Clark has been awarded $100 for his winning artwork. All submitted artwork is on display at The Medical Center Health & Wellness Center in Greenwood Mall through Dec. 22.

Greenwood academic team wins conference

Greenwood High Schools varsity academic team has won the South Central Kentucky Academic Conference for the third consecutive year. The GHS varsity team finished the season with a record of 10-1. Members of the varsity team are Ben King, Spencer Joyce, Caitlyn Abell, Ric Davis and Danny Flener. The Greenwood junior varsity team finished with a record of 8-3, and the freshman team compiled a record of 10-1.

School districts open houses are Thursday

The Warren County Board of Education Holiday Open House will be held Thursday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the board office at 303 Lovers Lane in Bowling Green.

The Bowling Green Board of Education will have its open house the same time. There will be holiday treats at the Joel C. Brown Administration Building, 1211 Center St., from 2:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Six county schools win service learning grants

Bowling Green/Warren County Community Education has awarded grants for Service Learning projects to six schools in the Warren County school district. The recipients are: Debbie Sledge, Alvaton Elementary; Cherie Riggenbach and Glenn Drexler, Briarwood Elementary; Linda McKinney, Cumberland Trace Elementary; Kristy Jent, North Warren Elementary; Mindy Pennycuff, Richardsville Elementary; and Nancy Booth and Stephanie Walker, Warren Central High School.

The recipients work in the schools as teachers, family resource center coordinators, or after-school site supervisors. They will use the money to perform various services that benefit the community while at the same time addressing core curriculum elements.

These projects will take place during the remainder of this school year. Projects range from working with veterans to assisting the Red Cross to donating to Ronald McDonald House in Nashville. Service learning projects are designed to build partnerships between schools and the community

Rory Atkison earns rank of Eagle Scout

Rory Atkison, 14, has earned the rank of Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of American troop 47 in Franklin.

Eagle Scout is the highest rank that can be attained by Scouts. Only 4 percent of youth who join scouting earn this honor.

Rory is the son of Kenny and Rita Atkison of Franklin and the grandson of Roy and Betty Atkison of Bowling Green and Ms. Mildred Puckett and the late Nova Puckett.

Rory was presented his rank on Oct. 29 during his Court of Honor ceremony and banquet, held at Salmons General Baptist Church fellowship hall, where he is a member.

He is enrolled as a freshman at Franklin-Simpson High School and is a member of the academic team and an honor student.

During his scouting career, he has served as patrol leader, chaplains aide, troop bugler and currently holds the position of assistant senior patrol leader.

He is a brotherhood member in the Order of the Arrow, which is an honor and service society within scouting. Landscaping a memorial at Vietnam Memorial Building completed his public service.

Rory received congratulatory letters from President and Mrs. Bush, Vice President and Mrs. Cheney, Secretary of State Colin Powell and Mrs. Powell, Governor Fletcher and Mrs. Fletcher, Pope John Paul and many more.

GHS students excel in orienteering contest

Greenwood High Schools Junior ROTC orienteering team took home several honors from the Kentuckiana High School Orienteering contest. The junior varsity team of Ben Folk, Tony King, Dustin Jones, and Cadet Johnson took second place overall. Greenwoods Jessica Ingram took first place on the Girls Yellow Course, Ann Payne took third place and Julie Murr finished fourth. On the boys Yellow Course, Cadet Alford was sixth and Dustin Jones was eighth. On the boys White Course, Cadet Mills was fourth and Cadet Weldon was fifth.

Greenwood students make all-district band

Eight Greenwood High School students were named to the Third District 11-12 All-District Band. They are: Steve Chang, Betsy Allen, Josh Hall, Alecia Isom, Shannon Owens, Susan Abell, Ross Uber and Jenny Pope.

Warren East students make all-district band

Three Warren East High School students were named to the Third District 11-12 All-District Band. They are: Chris Cline (trombone), Paden Reed (bartone) and Danielle Martin (tuba).

Amanda Childress receives scholarship

Amanda L. Childress, a Western Kentucky University senior from Bowling Green, has been awarded a Beta Gamma Sigma scholarship for her superior performance in the study of business. Childress has received a $1,000 scholarship to continue her education in 2004-2005.

David Keeling to be part of expedition

David Keeling, head of the Department of Geography and Geology at Western Kentucky University, will participate in an around-the-world expedition over the upcoming holiday period.

Keeling serves on the Board of Councilors of the American Geographical Society, North Americas oldest geographic society founded in 1851, and has lectured for the AGS on expeditions to such locations as the Chilean Fjords, the Cape Verde Islands, Morocco, Central Europe and the Falkland Islands.

The AGS expeditions are designed to focus attention on some of the planets most pressing problems, from global climate change and sea-level rise to sustainability in Africa and nationalist struggles in southeast Asia.

The around-the-world program will examine environmental challenges in Peru, social struggles in Easter Island and Samoa, pollution and deforestation around Australias Great Barrier Reef, nationalist challenges in Cambodia and Bhutan, ecotourism in Agra, India and Tanzania, and the problem of small island economies on Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean.

Businesses honored

at Alliance Awards

Seven businesses and organizations were honored Nov. 30 through the Alliance Awards, presented by the Kelly Autism Program at Western Kentucky University. The Alliance Awards are presented to businesses and organizations in the community who participate in the transition to work program for the Kelly Autism Program.

The recipients are: Hillvue Heights Church; Houchens Industries, Inc.; Jacksons Orchard and Nursery; Leichhardt Landscape Company, Inc.; Lowes of Bowling Green; Mariahs Restaurant; and Western Kentucky Active Day Center.

Schools schedule SBDM meetings

Cumberland Trace Elementary School site-based decision-making council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 16 in the school library.

The following Cumberland Trace Elementary School site-based decision-making committees will meet at 3:40 p.m. today in the school library: Instruction, Assessment, Curriculum, Communication and Professional Development.

Natcher Elementary School site-based decision-making council will meet at 5 p.m. Tuesday at the school.

Greenwood High School site-based decision-making council will meet at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the school library.
