Garden club gives brochures to pupils

The Bowling Green Garden Club of Bowling Green gave 6,000 Water Conservation and Preservation brochures it developed to Warren County pupils this week.

The pupils in kindergarten through fourth grade received the brochures Monday and a science class at Potter Gray and Briarwood Elementary schools each received a visit from Mighty Mizu water ranger and hero of the brochures.

The brochures will be ceremonially given to city and county school superintendents at 2 p.m. Thursday during a reception at The Houchens Center.

The garden club received a $500 WaterWise grant from the National Garden Clubs, which it matched locally to pay for the brochures.

Western Kentucky debaters take first

Members of the WKU Forensic Team took first-place honors in debate, individual and overall sweepstakes in a weekend tournament at Colorado College. In Lincoln-Douglas debate, Joelle Perry, a Florence sophomore, won a 3-1 decision in the final round over a competitor from Creighton University. Western had three first-place finishers in individual events and had two top 10 speakers out of 128 in parliamentary debate.

The results are as follows:

Caleb Williams, a senior from Lewisville, Texas, first in informative speaking, third in informative speaking.

Justin Cress, a Florence junior, first in impromptu speaking, second in extemporaneous speaking.

Logan Scisco, a Danville freshman, first in extemporaneous speaking, second in impromptu speaking.

Ashley Burgdorf, a freshman from Evansville, Ind., third in communication analysis.

Nicole Hawk, an Upton junior, fourth in extemporaneous speaking.

Jennifer Corum, an Auburn senior, fifth in impromptu speaking, ninth speaker in parliamentary debate.

Jennifer Purcell, a senior from Lewisville, sixth in impromptu speaking, seventh speaker in parliamentary debate.

Central JROTC

hosting drill meet

Warren Central Junior ROTC Program will host a Combined Services Drill Meet on Saturday.

Central, Greenwood, Bowling Green and Warren East high schools will be competing begin at 8:30 a.m. in the schools gymnasium.

There will be competition for color guard, squad drill and individual drill regulation. The competition is expected to be completed

Burke graduates from economic institute

Lewis Burke Jr. of Bowling Green Technical College graduated Oct. 9 from the University of Oklahomas Economic Development Institute.

The program involves completing three one-week sessions, which provides a broad spectrum of advanced education for the economic development professional.

BGCA students near

their reading goal

Eighteen students at Bowling Green Christian Academy this year have read 71 Accelerated Reader books, which are books on or above their grade level. When a student finishes a book, he or she is tested on it. If they receive a score of 90 or above, they add a loop to a paper chain stretching from the center of the room. The goal by the end of the year is to stretch the chains from the center to eight different locations throughout the room.

Lile part of quartet performing soon

Joanna Lile, a senior history major from Bowling Green, is a member of the quartet that will perform in the Georgetown College Handbells and Brass Ensemble Concert on Thursday. The event will be at 8 p.m. in John L. Hill Chapel and is free to the public.

Lile is the daughter of Steve and Donna Lile of Bowling Green.

Local authors signing books in Frankfort

Bowling Green authors Lowell H. Harrison and Douglas D. Moseley will be signing their new books at the 23rd annual Kentucky Book Fair on Nov. 13 at the Farnham Dudgeon Civic Center in downtown Frankfort.

Fair hours are 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Harrison, professor emeritus of history at Western Kentucky University, will bring new editions of his popular Kentucky s Governors and The Antislavery Movement in Kentucky. He focuses on the unique place Kentucky holds in the history of the United States.

Moseley, a former state legislator and retired United Methodist minister, will be signing A Table Speaks and Other Poems. The first half of the book is a narrative poem. It tells of joys, sorrows, births, deaths, community experiences, night riders, murders, marriages, divorces, customs, manners, politics, faith, hard work and folklore that an ordinary family would experience over 125 to 150 years.

Sledge a runner-up in scholarship program

Lauren Sledge, a fourth-grader at Bowling Green Christian Academy, was selected as second runner-up in the Pre-Teen Kentucky Scholarship and Recognition Program.

Finalists were evaluated on academic achievement, volunteer service to community, school honors and activities, development of personal skills and abilities, general knowledge ability, communicative ability and on-stage acknowledgment of accomplishments.

Christian academy celebrating 10th year

Bowling Green Christian Academy will celebrate its 10th anniversary Nov. 30 with conservative columnist Cal Thomas as the keynote speaker.

Thomas also is a Fox News commentator and his syndicated column appears in the Daily News.

The celebration will begin with a pre-dinner reception for Thomas and event sponsors at the Carroll Knicely Conference Center. Reservations are required for the dinner that begins at 6:30 p.m.

Art winners named

Bowling Green/Warren County Community Educations third annual Art Show was Oct. 28 at the ALIVE Center on U.S. 31-W By-Pass.

This year awards were given to children in grades K-12, as well as three adult winners.

The theme for the 2004 show was A World of Work, and featured drawings centered around career education. Children in grades K-6 did works titled What I Want to Be; grades 7-2 focused on their first career; adults did works called Our Children Our Future.

Works will be on display at a variety of locations throughout November. Winning pieces will be exhibited at Franklin Bank & Trust during December.
