Edward Fitzgerald Hayden, 80, of Bowling Green died at 4:12 p.m. June 12, 2003, at The Medical Center.The Owensboro native was a high school graduate of St. Francis Academy, earned a degree in mechanical engineering from St. Bernard Benedictine College in Cullman, Ala., where he was a member of St. Benedicts Oblates, was the chief tool designer and mechanical engineer, retired from Colt Industries and Holley Carburetor, worked at Sorenson Manufacturing Co., and was co-owner of Kentucky Connector Corp., both in Glasgow, was a member of Knights of Columbus, co-founder of the Christian Family Movement, co-founder and vice president of the Bowling Green conference of the St. Vincent de Paul Society and served for six years as president of the Owensboro diocesan council of the Society of St. Vincent de Paul. He served on the Board of the Pregnancy Support Center and on the Bowling Green Welfare Board. He was a son of the late Frances Fitzgerald and Angela Payne Hayden. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Phillip and Richard; and by two sisters, Dorothy and Mary Louise.Funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Holy Spirit Catholic Church, where he was a member and a member of the original Parish Council, with graveside service immediately following at St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday at J.C. Kirby & Son Funeral Home, Broadway Avenue chapel. Prayer service will be at 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to St. Vincent de Paul Society or to the Pregnancy Support Center.Survivors include his wife, Zita Mae Cecil Hayden; seven children, Edward F. Hayden Jr., and wife, Beth, of Dallas, Anita Garrison and husband, Dr. Neal, of Louisville, Mark B. Hayden of Bowling Green, James F. Hayden and wife, Terry, of Florida, Janice Plute and husband, Ron, of Dallas, Mary Jo Wilcher and husband, Larry, of Scottsville, and Betty Anne Watt and husband, Ray, of Bowling Green; two brothers, Norman Hayden and wife, Carolee, of Louisville and Carl Hayden and wife, Marty, of Muscatine, Iowa; two sisters, Bettie Hayden of Louisville and Carolyn Wilbert and husband, Jan, of De Soto, Texas; 23 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
