AUBURN The Rev. John Raymond OBrien, CPM, 81, of South Union died May 27, 2003, at Taylor Manor in Versailles.The Manhattan, N.Y., native was a member and former Superior General of the Catholic religious order the Fathers of Mercy, a graduate of New Yorks Benjamin Franklin High School and Fordham University School of Business, attended St. Marys College in St. Mary, continued his studies at the School of Philosophy of the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and received a bachelor of arts degree in 1948. He celebrated his 50th anniversary of priesthood in May, the same month in which he was awarded an honorary doctorate in letters from Holy Apostles College and Seminary in Cromwell, Conn. While in the Fathers of Mercy, he served as the orders Vicar General and was elected Superior General of the Order. He also studied aviation and became a licensed private pilot. He was a son of the late John Joseph OBrien and Gertrude Sheridan OBrien.Funeral mass will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Chapel Generalate of the Fathers of Mercy in South Union, with burial in the cemetery on the grounds of the Generalate. Visitation and vigil service will begin at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Generalates Chapel. Young Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.Survivors include a sister-in-law, Eleanor OBrien of Orlando, Fla.; a brother-in-law, Thomas Cotter of Fishkill, N.Y.; six nephews, James Cotter of Easton, Pa., Michael Cotter of Peekskill, N.Y., Thomas OBrien of Freehold, N.J., Glenn OBrien of Winter Springs, Fla., Russell OBrien of Vero Beach, Fla., and Robert OBrien of Howell, N.J.; and five nieces, Ann Haslinger of Carey, Ill., Joan Cotter of Yonkers, N.Y., Claire Baucom of Tuscon, Ariz., Eileen LaFuente of Peekskill and Mary Salley of Newtown, Conn.
