BEAVER DAM Friends and family said farewell to Melissa Kaye Katie Autry Monday afternoon. She wore her Hancock County cheerleader uniform and red and white flowers adorned the silver casket, which was open during the visitation and funeral. Autry died Wednesday from burns she received in a fire May 4 in her Western Kentucky University dorm room. Lucas Bryan Goodrum, 21, of Scottsville, was arrested Sunday morning and charged with murder. Stephen L. Soules, 20, of Scottsville was arrested Monday evening and charged with murder. Both men have pleaded not guilty in the case. More than 150 family and friends packed the chapel at the William L. Danks Funeral Home here. The family picked out songs such as My Girl, Song of the South and Sweet Hour of Prayer to be played during the funeral. The day, however, was not without its problems. Katie Autrys roommate, Danica Jackson, had been asked to not attend the funeral, family members said. But she showed up any way, visibly upsetting family members. Jackson, who could not be reached for comment today, left shortly before the funeral began. During the funeral, the Rev. Chuck Fuller of Pellville Baptist Church where Katie Autry and her foster family were members told the biblical story of Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. God has a plan for every death, he told the mourners. Fuller said God performed a miracle Wednesday night. Hes resurrected Katie to a heavenly life, he said. Today, were here to mourn her loss, but also to celebrate her life. Katie Autry was laid to rest in Rosine Cemetery next to her grandparents. Death is something we have to do in these bodies here, the Rev. Buddy Swift of Morgantown said. Theres no tears where Katie is today. Lisa Autry, Katie Autrys sister, thanked God for the four days Katie Autry lived in Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, where she was taken after the fire. While there, Lisa Autry, 17, read a poem to her sister and Katie Autry responded by squeezing Lisas hand. I know she loved me, Lisa Autry said. Katie Autry and her younger sister were close. My sister was my everything, Lisa Autry said. Without her, I was nothing. Lisa Autry said Katie Autry made her stronger. When friends and family members died, Katie Autry was there for her sister to lean on. She didnt let me give up, Lisa Autry said. While Katie Autry was in the hospital, the roles switched. I was there for her every step of the way, Lisa Autry said. She will always remember Katie Autrys pretty smile and said she is a pretty angel. I know shes always there looking down on me, Lisa Autry said. Barbie White, Katie Autrys cousin, said Katie was more like a sister. I loved her, White said. White will hold on to her memories of her cousin. Her laugh was like an explosion, White said. When she laughed, everyone laughed because it was so beautiful. White said she will see Katie Autry again in heaven. This is not goodbye, White said.
