T.J. Samson Community Hospital and The Medical Center at Bowling Green will jointly fund a cancer center in Barren County. Cancer patients are generally very sick, and travel just adds to their stress, said Doris Thomas, a vice president for Commonwealth Health Corp., the parent company of The Medical Center. This will allow them to receive treatment closer to home. The Medical Center has been operating the Barren River Regional Center in Glasgow since December, but the agreement between the two medical facilities was reached this week. This will be a 50-50 partnership, Thomas said. Sherry Tabor, a spokeswoman for T.J. Samson, said the move will offer a service to the community. Our main concern is providing the best care possible to our neighbors who have been stricken with cancer, T.J. Samson CEO Dwayne Moss said. With the Barren River Regional Cancer Center, the radiation therapy services they need will be provided. Thomas said it has been The Medical Centers intention for a while to operate a facility in Glasgow. Previously about 27 percent of oncology patients at the Bowling Green facility were coming from the Glasgow area. Since opening, the center has begun serving about 80 patients 53 of them new. We see about 30 people a day, Thomas said. Oncologist Craig Tyree is the director of the center, which has six other employees. The facility, located at 103 Trista Lane across from T.J. Samson, represents a $2.5 million investment in land and equipment purchases and renovation.
