Avery Joseph A.J. Thurman, 90, of Bowling Green died at 11:30 p.m. Dec. 6, 2003, at The Medical Center.The Rhea County, Tenn., native was a retired director of Student Financial Aid at Western Kentucky University and a life member of the Kentucky Association of Student Financial Aid Administration. He was a member of First Baptist Church, where he was a member of the Baracca Sunday School class, a former deacon and Sunday school superintendent, a life member, past president and past lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis Club, receiving the Kiwanis International 50-year Legion of Honor and was awarded the Kiwanis International Hixon Fellowship. He served on the advisory board for The Salvation Army, was a life member of the Park City Chapter 128, Order of Eastern Star, where he served as patron, was a life member of the Grand Lodge No. 73 of Kentucky F & AM and was a 60-year member of the Odd Fellows. He was a son of the late J.W. Thurman and Gracie Holloway Thurman.Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Johnson-Vaughn-Phelps Funeral Home with burial in Fairview Cemetery No. 2. Visitation will be from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home.Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to First Baptist Church.Survivors include his wife, Abbie E. Sherrill Thurman; a daughter, Carol T. Oliver and her husband, Gary W., of Bowling Green; and a granddaughter, Amy Ann Oliver of Bowling Green.
